I came to Muro de Alcoy, Alicante with my family at the end of the 60s and since then we have been linked to agriculture and olive oil. In 2010 we decided to build the oil mill La Alquería to close the cultivation cycle and be able to produce our own oils and controlling every step of the process. In order to obtain an olive juice as complex and intense as possible we had to forego a big part of the yield of our olives, always harvesting prior to the moment when the olives change their colour in the ripening process. But not only this: our parents have instilled in us the love for nature and the respect for the environment that surrounds us and there was no doubt that at any moment any agricultural practice we develop will have to respect the environment. This is when we decided after already having cultivated our olives using environmentally-friendly practices, to obtain a certificate for these practices.
The Verdecho farm was abandoned for 15 years when we reclaimed it in 2014. The olive trees planted between 1950 and 1987 needed a lot of work and love to return to their original state. We had to re-plant more than 1,000 olive trees and chose the Alfafarenca variety to be together with the Blanqueta varieties that traditionally grow in the mountains of Alicante, even though last year we also added more than a hundred olive trees of the Manzanilla Villalonga variety. We initiated the process of organic agriculture certification the same year when we acquired the farm, when we from 2009 on had already started to certify other plots and were sure that this was the path we wanted to follow.
The farm Verdecho is situated on the right border of the tail of the reservoir of Beniarrés, around 350 meters above sea level. With a surface covering 13 hectares the farm is interlocked with the foothills of the Natural Parque of the Sierra Mariola and is protected in the North by the “Solana de Benicadell”. To save this complex terrain the olive trees grow on terraces that descend down to the reservoir. We cultivate our olive trees organically since we bought the farm in 2014. Apart from the Picual variety, we cultivate Blanqueta, Alfafarenca and Manzanilla Villalonga as well, all of them being flagship varieties and very typical for this region in the mountains of Alicante. In the surrounding plots our neighbours cultivate almond, cherry and more olive trees and where there is no cultivation large masses of Mediterranean vegetation (pine trees, rosemary, thyme, mastic…) spread. Given its proximity to the reservoir it is possible to observe ducks, Eurasian Coot and other aquatic birds. Granivorous birds like patridges, serins or finches; insectivores such as the robin, the great tit or the woodpecker or raptors like the golden eagle, the goshawk, the sparrowhawk, the common kestrel, the eagle owl, the long-eared owl, the little owl, the tawny owl, the barn owl, the scops owl, the griffon vulture and the red kite as well as rabbits, foxes, badgers and wild boars.
