Adopt an almond tree from the farm "Doña Marina" in Guadahortuna (Spain) and receive your harvest in the form of shelled almonds at home. Pedro will take care of your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you receive your harvest and you enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.
You adopt an almond tree cultivated under the European Union's Organic Farming regulations. We are in the process of converting and hope to get certified in 2023. During the process of adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your almond tree. The Mediterranean is more than a sea: it is a way of life, closely entwined with the produce of the land. If you would like a taste of it and a chance to be a part of one of the most authentic experiences of the region, then join our community at Cortijo Doña Marina, a farm located in the province of Granada. We offer you the chance to adopt an almond tree grown according to organic standards (currently in conversion) in a fertile soil that also serves as pasture for sheep. The almond tree, *Prunus dulcis*, belongs to the same family as the apple tree and originated in the Middle East. Almonds were first brought to Spain by the Romans. Numerous varieties have since been developed, each adapted to different conditions or known for their specific properties. On the farm we have different varieties of almond trees, ranging in age from 3 to 60 years. One of the tastiest of these varieties are __Vairo__ and __Lauranne__. Vairo is a Spanish variety that originated in Catalonia and flowers very vigorously. The kernel is short and Vairo is the best variety for roasting. The Lauranne variety originated in France and is highly resistant to pests. The fruit is elongated and has a very sweet taste. Both varieties are well adapted to spring frosts, which occur frequently in our very mountainous area. You would be surprised how cold it gets in this part of Spain! The combination of all these parameters gives our almonds a characteristic, rich, highly concentrated flavour. Our almond trees are entirely rain-fed, and no irrigation water is used. We have started the process of conversion towards organic certification and expect it to be completed by 2023. In addition to the organic cultivation methods, our trees have another secret: sheep graze among them in a natural and mutually beneficial symbiosis. The sheep feed off the grass, keeping it short around the trees, and they provide the natural fertilizer we need to produce quality almonds. This means we can avoid using any added fertilizers or herbicides. The fact that the sheep graze among our trees may seem like an insignificant detail, but it actually has many positive effects. This way of farming helps to prevent soil erosion and increases biodiversity. It is a way of optimizing the resources of the land and yields three products on the same plot (if we count the honey from the bees pollinating the almonds). Our dream is to develop a farm that encourages people to see that, with sustainable practices and responsible agriculture, we can fight climate change. The productive life of an almond tree is around 80 years. For as long as you want to keep it and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew your adoption year after year. If your almond tree dies, we will replace it with no additional cost and assuring the delivery of your harvest from others. Each almond tree bears an average of 3kg per season.
Each season we will send you a box with: 1 x __Almonds, shelled but not skinned__ (3kg, in a cotton bag) We send you a little piece of the Mediterranean to your home, ready for you to eat. You will receive your shelled (not skinned) almonds and we are sure you will fall in love with their taste! Vairo and Lauranne almonds have a rich flavour and are crunchy and aromatic. We love to eat them raw or toasted, or to use them ground in recipes or desserts. Go ahead and get creative! They will arrive packed in a cotton bag that you can reuse at home or in the garden. Storage: In order to maintain their full flavour and crunchy texture, we recommend that you follow three steps: 1. Keep them below 25ºC: In the hottest months, it may be necessary to put them in the fridge. 2. Keep them away from the sunlight. If they are left for several weeks (4 or more) in sunlight they will start to oxidize and their flavour will start to change. 3. For shelled almonds, choose jars or bags that can be closed with a lid, elastic band or clip. This way they will not absorb moisture and will maintain their texture. You will receive your harvest personalized with the name you chose in the adoption process.
When will you receive it?
You may select the delivery date of your box as suggested by the Farmer at check-out. We harvest in September and October and will send you your almonds in November.
