Vad adopterar du?

You adopt 5m² of a pumpkin patch from our farm in Bienenbüttel Ortsteil Rieste (Tyskland). Cultivation certified organic by the European Union since 2017. Your 5m² are home to 3 or 4 pumpkin plants of the "Solor" variety, from which we can harvest approx. 8kg of Hokkaido for you. In addition to sweet potatoes and other crops, we have also been growing pumpkins on our fields since 2020. Before long, it became clear that they were the perfect partners to grow alongside the sweet potatoes in our fields. Many of our machines can, after a brief conversion, also be used for pumpkin cultivation, while pumpkins and sweet potatoes also harmonise well together in the store. By the way, pumpkins and sweet potatoes also make a great team in the kitchen and are valued by many on account of their many valuable nutrients. For these reasons, we have firmly integrated the pumpkin into our crop rotation for 2021 and are pleased to be able to offer you CrowdFarming packages of German organic pumpkins this year. We've decided to principally grow the two popular varieties Hokkaido and Butternut. At CrowdFarming, we're starting with the Hokkaido. The round Hokkaido pumpkin, probably originally from Japan, has been one of the most popular varieties in Germany for years. One particular advantage is that the bright orange skin softens during cooking and can therefore be eaten without any problems. They typically have a sweet and strong flavour. *What does the growing cycle look like? * At the end of May the seeds are sown as single seeds, 3cm deep in the soil. Each pumpkin plant has 0.75m² of space on our field. When sowing, we make sure to leave a large distance of 1.50m between the planting rows. That may sound like a lot, but the plant needs space and forms large leaves and tendrils quickly after germination. In warm weather it takes about 7-10 days for the first cotyledons to penetrate the ground. From this point on we have to be quick to start targeted, mechanical weed control and field maintenance. Depending how many weeds are present, we drive through the field with the harrow in the early plant stage to spill or pull them out. This works much like a light rake. Before the field is completely covered with the pumpkin plants, we drive the hoe through the field. The pointed shares are used to cut off larger weeds from the ground between the rows of pumpkins. This gives the pumpkin enough space to grow and makes sure that it is not shaded by other plants or has to compete for nutrients. Beautiful large yellow flowers form on the pumpkin plants at the beginning of July. Bumblebees are particularly fond of flying to the large flowers to get covered in their abundant pollen. After a short flowering period, the flower closes again and finally forms the pumpkin fruit below the base of the flower. If the summer stays very dry, we use a sprinkler to supply the pumpkins with our well water. This is important in order to be able to harvest sufficiently large produce. Then at the end of September the time has come. The plant dies naturally and starts wilting. We harvest the fully grown pumpkins by hand and collect them in wooden boxes. Here we proceed very carefully to prevent the pumpkins on the bottom from getting bruised. This is followed by our quality control. The pumpkins are washed and prepared for shipment. The pumpkins can be kept for a good three months in a dark and dry room at 12-14°C. Your pumpkin patch produces an average of 32kg of Bioland organic pumpkins each season. You do not have to commit to the consumption of the whole harvest. Each season you may decide what quantity to reserve and pay the maintenance in accordance with that amount. This way you will only pay for what you consume and will be able to sell any remaining harvest to others. *Any more general information about the pumpkin?* Pumpkins are one of the oldest cultivated plants known to man. They are said to have been grown in Europe since the 16th century. They come in a wide range of shapes and colours and there are thought to be over 850 different varieties. Pumpkins are low in calories and considered a healthy cooking ingredient and a real nutritional bomb thanks to their many healthy ingredients, which include antioxidants, carotenoids, iron and calcium.

Vad får du?

During harvest season you can progressively receive the quantity of harvest that you reserve at the moment of adoption. You will be able to receive a minimum of 1 boxes, which can be increased up to 4 boxes according to your needs. Shipping format: __8kg Bioland organic pumpkins__ (loose in a box) __Your harvest:__ You receive approx. 8kg of Bioland Hokkaido loose in a box with recyclable, plastic-free padding material. __Use:__ When cooked, the Hokkaido takes on a velvety-soft, almost buttery texture and is pleasantly sweet and aromatic. It can be used in many ways and is for example suitable with oven and pan vegetables, in soups, or as a baking ingredient in cakes and bread. It can be served sweet as well as savoury and can be combined with our sweet potatoes. Smaller pumpkins are often more aromatic. The Hokkaido can easily be consumed together with its skin. __Storage:__ The harvest takes place at the end of September and the pumpkins can be kept for several months if stored in a dark, dry place.

När får du det?

We harvest the pumpkins at the end of September. The pumpkins are then washed and checked to ensure they meet our high quality standards. They are then sorted and packed in October. Just as the days get shorter and colder and you start craving pumpkin soup, we'll send your pumpkin package to your door.
