Adopt en passionsfruktsplanta from the farm "Sicilian Passion" in Licata (AG) (Italien) and receive your passion fruits at home. Antonio will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.
You adopt en passionsfruktsplanta from our farm in Licata (AG) (Italien) that we cultivate following the Organic Farming regulations of the European Union. We are already in the process of converting and expect to be officially certified by 2024. When placing the adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your passionsfrukts-planta. The variety you are going to adopt is the *Passiflora Edulis Sims*, a variety that lends itself to cultivation in our area with a high quality production and the right balance betweensweet and sour. The passion fruit plant is a climber that needs support to grow. It flowers twice a year, in spring and autumn, and produces two harvests a year, in summer and winter. Its beautiful and distinctive flowers are a sight to see, hence the name passion fruit. There is an anecdote about its significance. A Jesuit explorer in 1610 found some similarities between the flower and Christian religious symbols. The flower has 10 petals like the 10 apostles, its filaments remind us of the crown of thorns, the flower has 5 stamens, which represent the 5 wounds that were inflicted on Jesus. There are three pistils, which would be the 3 nails that held Jesus on the cross, and finally, the purple colour reminds us of the tunic that was put on him. The variety we grow has a red fruit. The passion fruit is native to Brazil, where there are native species that still grow wild in tropical forests and savannas. It is a plant that does not tolerate cold and prefers warm temperate climates. Today it is cultivated in the tropical areas of Latin America and Asia, but also in southern Spain and for the last two years in Sicily. The cultivation of passion fruit is very laborious, as the plants have to be hand-guided on stakes and constantly pruned. In the past, the passion fruit was harvested as soon as it spontaneously fell from the plant, a sign of its ripeness. Nowadays, with the help of technology and specific tools we can pick the fruit directly from the plant without waiting for it to fall to the ground, thus preventing the fruit from being too ripe and unsuitable for transport. Your adoption is 6 years old and its productive life is 10 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops being able to produce for any reason, we will replace it with an other, and we guarantee your delivery from the produce of others for that season. Your passionsfrukts-planta produces an average of 15.4kg of passion fruits each season. You do not have to commit to ordering the entire harvest though. Each season you can decide how much you want to reserve, and you pay the maintenance cost according to that amount. This way you only pay for what you plan to consume, and we can offer any surplus harvest to others.
During the season, you will be able to receive the harvest that you are reserving now: a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 7 boxes. Once you have paid for the adoption, you will be able to plan your shipments from your user account. Shipping format: __2.2 kg box of red passion fruits__ * *Passiflora Edulis*: round shape, red-purple colour, skin wrinkles as the fruit ripens, sour and very aromatic taste, orange pulp with (edible) seeds * Farming in conversion to Organic Farming since 2021 * We do not store fruits in cold chambers, they go directly from the tree to your doorstep * Our farm is not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in appearance and size * One kilo contains between 18 and 24 fruits * If you keep them in a fresh and airy place, they can last up to 2 weeks in good condition (if you want them to last longer, you can keep them in the fridge) The more the fruit shrivels, the riper it becomes. This natural dehydration concentrates the flavours in the pulp and indicates that the fruit is ready to be eaten. So if it arrives shrivelled, don't panic - it will only taste better! You can keep it in the fridge to extend its shelf life. You can eat it as it is, cut it in half and scoop out the pulp with a teaspoon or use it in many dessert recipes, with yoghurt, in cocktails or try it on ice cream as we do in Sicily.
När får du det?
The Passion fruit has two seasons a year, one in summer and one in winter. The summer season runs from July to September and the winter season from December to March. We work in the countryside, without greenhouses, so these forecasts may vary slightly depending on weather conditions and adaptation to the rhythm of nature. IMPORTANT: Passion fruit cannot be picked from the plant and is harvested when the fruit ripens and falls to the ground. It is difficult to guarantee quantity forecasts as we will not always have fruit available: some weeks we will have a lot of fruit, others not so much. We recommend that you plan the shipment of all your passion fruit boxes at the time of adoption so that you do not run out of fruit in case quantities are low during the shipping season.
