Adopt a kiwi plant from the farm "Peña Colmenal" in Belmonte de Miranda (Spanien) and receive your harvest in the form of organic kiwis at home. Noel will take care of your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. As the production coming from one kiwi plant is big, the adoption is shared among various people. If you wish to have a bigger share, you may adopt more than once. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you receive your harvest and you enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.
Adopt a kiwi plant that we cultivate under the Organic Farming regulations of the European Union since 2018. In 2015, we transformed a family farm engaged in fodder production into a Hayward kiwi plantation, which is the common green kiwi. These trees are native to China, but with major plantations in New Zealand. More than forty years ago, kiwi trees were brought to our region, Asturias, from New Zealand. We have the climatic and environmental conditions here that are very similar to those in New Zealand, which help us produce a fruit that is highly valued for its quality. This plant belongs to the *Actinidiaceae* family, and its name speaks for itself, as it's called Actinidia deliciosa, which gives you an idea of the wonderful taste of its fruits. Since the outset, we've carried out practices that respect the environment, avoiding the use of herbicides and fungicides and incorporating only natural fertilisers. After two years, we decided to certify our plantation as organic so that you as the final customer have all the guarantees that you're consuming a 100% organic product, certified by COPAE, the body that certifies and audits organic farming in our region. Thanks to our good crop management practices, we only had one year of conversion, and since 2018 we have held the organic farming certificate, which we renew annually. The productive life of a kiwi plant is around 30 years. For as long as you want to keep it and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew your adoption year after year. If your kiwi plant dies, we will replace it with no additional cost and assuring the delivery of your harvest from others. Each kiwi plant bears an average of 30kg of organic kiwis per season. Each kiwi plant is adopted by 6 CrowdFarmers who receive a box with 5 kg of organic kiwis.
Each season we will send you a box with: __5 kg box of organic green kiwi__ * Intense green colour, fleshy pulp and a very characteristic flavour, sweet yet slightly sour * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 2008 * Harvest on request, shipped without wax or preservative treatments in a cardboard box without plastics * We harvest our kiwis at the optimal point of ripeness, always with a sugar concentration higher than 7 degrees Brix * One kilo contains between 10 and 12 fruits * If you keep them in a fresh and airy place, they can last 6 - 8 weeks in good condition; don't worry if the skin wrinkles, as your kiwi is still perfectly edible * It is a climacteric fruit, harvested when it reaches physiological ripeness but continues to evolve after harvesting until it is ready for consumption * Important: The fruits usually arrive hard, keep them at room temperature until they reach they are ready to eat; if you receive an alread ripe piece, you can put it in the fridge or eat it straight away The ripeness reached naturally by the kiwi on the plant is far from the optimal point of consumption. This peculiarity means that we carefully control the level of sugar in the fruit to make sure that we start the harvest at exactly the right time. The low temperatures during harvest months would prevent the fruit from ripening on the plant, and would also put the entire harvest at risk by exposing it to frost, which is quite common in our area. As the kiwi is a climacteric fruit, its ripening continues after being harvested. So, don't worry, a few days after you receive the box, your kiwis will have reached the optimal ripeness for you to enjoy their wonderful flavour. This means that the fruit will finish its ripening process at your house, so simply put the kiwis that you want to eat in the next few days alongside apples, pears or bananas, and in a few days they'll be ready for consumption while preserving all their properties. You can also speed up this process by adding a few kiwis to one of these fruits in a sealed container or paper bag. You'll know that the fruit is ready to eat if it softens to gentle pressure. You can adapt the degree of ripening to your personal taste, depending on whether you want a sweeter or a slightly more sour kiwi fruit.
När får du det?
In our region, the kiwi is ready to harvest in mid-November. In order to offer a high-quality product, which has all nutritional qualities and a long shelf life, we wait for the fruit to have 7 degrees Brix of sugar, at which point we pick it.
