Vad adopterar du?

You adopt a dragon fruit plant from our farm in Salobreña (Spanien) that we cultivate following the Organic Farming regulations of the European Union. We are already in the process of converting and expect to be officially certified by 2024. We grow three varieties of pitaya, also known as dragon fruit, on our family farm Huertas de Salobreña. The red-fleshed pitaya and the white-fleshed pitaya are the main ones, but we also grow the yellow pitaya. However, there isn't much production of the yellow variety and we can't guarantee the amount you receive, so if you do find one in your box, take it as a special treat! The pitaya plant is a cactus native to the tropical part of Central and South America stretching from Mexico to Brazil. It's an elongated and leafless plant with small thorns and needs very little water to grow. The branches have an interwoven appearance and the plant produces amazing flowers, which last for a very short time and must be hand-pollinated at sunrise, as their natural pollinators (bats) are scarce in Europe. The name pitaya means 'scaly fruit' in Haitian. 'Dragon fruit' is a more recent name that refers to its scales looking like those of a dragon. The Costa Tropical in Granada is one of the few places in Europe that boasts the perfect conditions of light, humidity and temperature for the optimal growth of this delicate fruit. Planting, production, harvesting and packaging are all done by hand. What's more, we use sustainable cultivation techniques and pollinate and pick each fruit one by one. Your adoption is 4 years old and its maximum lifespan is 30 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops producing for any reason, we will replace it with another, and guarantee you the delivery from the production of other units. Your dragon fruit plant produces an average of 4kg of dragon fruits in organic conversion each season. You do not have to commit to ordering the entire harvest though. Each season you can decide how much you want to reserve, and you pay the maintenance cost according to that amount. This way you only pay for what you plan to consume, and we can offer any surplus harvest to others.

Vad får du?

You can reserve between 2 and 2 boxes for the season, and then progressively plan theit delivery for any of the delivery dates available in the shipment calendar. Shipping format: 2kg box of __pitaya (dragon fruit)__ * Oval shape; medium size (about 350g per piece); fleshy skin with waxy-looking triangular bracts; red or yellow on the outside, and white or red on the inside; with small black seeds and a soft, sweet pulp * Farming in conversion to biodynamic farming since 2021 * To protect the plants and ensure their growth, this product was grown with the help of additional artificial structures (protective netting) * Picked the day before shipment at their optimal point of ripeness and shipped in a cardboard box without plastics * The box includes some extra fruits, in case some of them arrive damaged * Our farm is not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in appearance and size * One kilo contains between 2 and 4 fruits (the box contains between 6 and 8 fruits depending on the size) * If you keep them the fridge, they can last up to 15 days in good condition Each pitaya has a subtle, sweet and fresh flavour. To eat, simply cut each fruit in half and scoop the pulp out with a spoon. Another option is to slice the fruit into small portions and remove the skin (like an orange wedge). In colder weather, the fruit may look slightly unattractive, but it doesn't mean that its pulp has lost any quality.

När får du det?

The pitaya harvest season in Spain starts at the end of summer and lasts all autumn. Each plant flowers three times on average, with some even flowering four times. The pitayas are then harvested approximately every 25-35 days.
