Adopt a vegetable garden plot from "Finca Quixote" in Llanos del Caudillo (Spanien) and receive your harvest in the form of Demeter organic onions, garlic and pumpkins at home. Carlos will take care of your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you receive your harvest and you enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.
You adopt 4m² of a vegetable garden plot from our farm in Llanos del Caudillo (Spanien). The cultivation is certified as organic by the European Union since 2016, and as Demeter since 2016. Finca Quixote was founded in 2001 on the basis of two fundamental pillars: respect for the land and the search for innovation in growing food. Accordingly, we obtained our first organic certificate in 2003 and today we cultivate our land under Demeter regulations. We grow white onions and red onions here at Finca Quixote, and specifically two varieties of each type, early and late. This means that we have fresh onions for more months in the year. *Allium cepa* is the scientific name for what we all know as the onion, a vegetable originally from Central Asia. However, it was the Greeks and Romans who brought it to Europe, including Spain, where it is still grown today. It's said to have been one of the first vegetables ever cultivated by humans and a staple foodstuff for soldiers or pyramid builders. We also grow purple garlic and squashes. Purple garlic is native to Castile-La Mancha and belongs to the *Allium sativum* species, one of the oldest vegetables used by man. Although the exact origin of garlic is unknown, it is believed that it spread from Asia Minor to Africa, and from there it reached the Mediterranean area. The exact origin of the squash (*Cucurbita maxima*) is unknown, it's believed to be native to Mexico and definitely dates back at least five thousand years. Onions and squash require about 6000m³/h of water to grow properly, garlic requires 3500. If we don't get enough rainfall, we use a drip irrigation system to guarantee your harvest. We use water responsibly, implementing a probe system that tells us when to water and how much water to add to each plot. Following our goal to “close the circle”, we carry out periodic crop rotations, minimise waste as much as possible, and revalue our waste with the help of both our animals and those of nearby farmers and our compost area. Your vegetable garden plot produces an average of 50kg of Demeter organic onions, garlic and pumpkins each season. You do not have to commit to the consumption of the whole harvest. Each season you may decide what quantity to reserve and pay the maintenance in accordance with that amount. This way you will only pay for what you consume and will be able to sell any remaining harvest to others.
During harvest season you can progressively receive the quantity of harvest that you reserve at the moment of adoption. You will be able to receive a minimum of 1 boxes, which can be increased up to 1 boxes according to your needs. It has a spicier taste and a more intense smell than other varieties * Squash buttermut: pear-shaped, yellow-tan rind and deep orange flesh; sweet, aromatic and slight nutty flavour * Biodynamic farming certified by the Demeter label since 2016 * 1kg of onions contains between 4 and 5 pieces * 1kg of garlic contains between 25 and 30 pieces * 1 piece weighs between 0,5 and 1,5kg * If you keep the onions in a fresh and airy place, they can last 4 weeks in good condition, garlics can last up to 8 weeks and squashes 3 weeks

When we grow vegetables, we try to organise the sowing dates to stagger the harvest and offer you the freshest product. We begin sowing onions at the beginning of the year to offer you onions and garlic from June to December, although this depends on the weather conditions of each year. We plant the squash in May, when the weather is ideal for the crop here, and we start the harvest in July and August. If you don't feel like eating squash in the hotter weather, we'll store it in a cool place (where it preserves all its flavour) and send it out by December.
