Adopt a tomato plant from the farm "Finca Quixote" in Llanos del Caudillo (Spanien) and receive your harvest in the form of organic Demeter tomatoes at home. Carlos will take care of your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you receive your harvest and you enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.
You adopt a tomato plant from our farm in Llanos del Caudillo (Spanien). Cultivation certified organic by the European Union since 2003 and certified Demeter since 2016. During the process of adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your tomato plants. The tomato *(Lycopersicon esculentum)* is originally from South America, from where it was sent to Europe on Spanish ships. It instantly wowed the Spanish and they started to grow the plant on the land, from where it soon spread to Italy and other Mediterranean countries. Our tomatoes of the Otelo variety grow protected by a mesh known as anti-thrip, very similar to the mosquito net used in many homes. This mesh is mounted on the structure of a greenhouse, but it's very different, as our tomatoes follow the production cycle of an outdoor plant. In other words, we don't bring forward the harvest. What's more, the plants die with the first frost of the year, and when it rains, they get wet and benefit from the breeze. The lifespan of this mesh is also much longer than plastic meshes in greenhouses, and we drastically scale down plastic waste generation (we've had the initial mesh for ten years already). So, you might be wondering why we don't plant the tomatoes outdoors. Well, doing so would be ideal, but such a high number of plants hugely increases exposure to pests and the risk of losing the harvest. We follow the philosophy of biodynamic agriculture, certified by Demeter, and we base our agricultural practices on minimum interference. In fact, this mesh means that we can drastically reduce interference by creating a small-scale ecosystem for our crop that minimises attacks by pests such as aphids or red spider mites. This also minimises the treatments on our plants and the risk posed by the frequent hailstorms in the summer (we all know that the skin of a tomato isn't as hard as the skin of a melon or a watermelon). To foster this ecosystem, we have bumblebee hives around our crops, we raise quails inside (which help fight pests), and we grow sweet alyssum and basil, which encourage the presence of natural enemies in our crops. For irrigation, we use the water from our reservoir, which is filled with rainwater that falls onto our logistics centre (remember that our tomato plants get wet if it rains, as they're not in a greenhouse). Your tomato plants produces an average of 32kg of organic Demeter tomatoes each season. You do not have to commit to the consumption of the whole harvest. Each season you may decide what quantity to reserve and pay the maintenance in accordance with that amount. This way you will only pay for what you consume and will be able to sell any remaining harvest to others.
During harvest season you can progressively receive the quantity of harvest that you reserve at the moment of adoption. You will be able to receive a minimum of 4 boxes, which can be increased up to 8 boxes according to your needs.
