Adopt a squash patch from "Finca Quixote" in Llanos del Caudillo (Spanien) and receive your harvest in the form of Demeter squashes at home. Carlos will take care of your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you receive your harvest and you enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.
You adopt 5m² of a squash patch from our farm in Llanos del Caudillo (Spanien). The cultivation is certified as organic by the European Union since 2016, and as Demeter since 2016. Finca Quixote was founded in 2001 on the basis of two fundamental pillars: respect for the land and the search for innovation in growing food. Accordingly, we obtained our first organic certificate in 2003 and today we cultivate our land under Demeter regulations. Although the exact origin of the squash (*Cucurbita maxima*) is unknown, it's believed to be native to Mexico and definitely dates back at least five thousand years. Objects such as spoons, recipients, musical instruments and ornaments have been unearthed, reflecting the importance of this staple food in pre-Columbian society. On our farm, we currently grow the Butternut and Hokkaido varieties, both of which are very flavoursome and have different characteristics, even though they're quite similar from an agronomic point of view. We plant the squash in May, when the weather is ideal for the crop here, and we start the harvest in July and August. The squash requires about 6000m³/ha of water to grow properly. If we don't get enough rainfall, we use a drip irrigation system to guarantee your harvest. We use water responsibly, implementing a probe system that tells us when and how much to water each plot. What's more, we grow sweet alyssum (a highly aromatic plant with white flowers) among our plants to encourage the presence of natural enemies to pests as well as pollinators, which are vital for the success of our crops. Following our goal to “close the circle”, we carry out periodic crop rotations, minimise waste as much as possible, and revalue our waste with the help of both our animals and those of nearby farmers and our compost area. Your squash field produces an average of 30kg of Demeter squashes each season. You do not have to commit to the consumption of the whole harvest. Each season you may decide what quantity to reserve and pay the maintenance in accordance with that amount. This way you will only pay for what you consume and will be able to sell any remaining harvest to others.
During harvest season you can progressively receive the quantity of harvest that you reserve at the moment of adoption. You will be able to receive a minimum of 2 boxes, which can be increased up to 6 boxes according to your needs. Shipping format: __ 5kg box of Demeter squash__ * Butternut squash: pear-shaped, yellow-tan rind and deep orange pulp; sweet, aromatic and slight nutty flavour * The squash can be roasted, boiled or grilled before eating * Biodynamic farming certified by the Demeter label since 2016 * 1 piece weighs between 0,5 and 1,5kg (the box contains 4-8 pumpkins approximately, depending on the size) * If you keep them in a fresh and airy place, they can last 3 weeks in good condition * If you don't finish them once cut open, cover to prevent them from drying out and store in the fridge
När får du det?
We sow the squashes in May, when the weather is ideal for the crop here, and we start the harvest in July and August. If you don't feel like eating squashes in the hotter weather, we'll store them in a cool place (where they preserves all their flavour) and send them out by December.
