Adopt ett avokadoträd from the farm "Finca Los Pepones" in Vélez-Málaga (Spanien) and receive your harvest in the form of organic avocados and lemons at home. María will take care of your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.
You adopt an avocado tree of the Hass or Lamb Hass variety, grown organically since 2017. The Hass variety already has an organic label, while the Lamb Hass variety is in the process of being converted to organic and we hope to obtain the label in 2023. During the process of adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your avokadoträd. Hass and Lamb Hass are very similar varieties when it comes to appearance and quality. The two main differences are the ripening time of the fruit and its size. The Lamb Hass variety ripens a little later and has slightly larger fruits. The adult avocado trees on our farm are Hass. They're larger and can reach a height of four to five metres. The youngest are Lamb Hass, which have yet to exceed a height of three metres. Even so, we prune them to facilitate the harvest and ensure they suffer less in the winter storms. With your adoption, you'll receive a mixed box of avocados and lemons. The lemons are of the Fino variety, which we've been growing organically for more than twenty years. The Fino variety is one of the most commonly grown in Spain. This is a traditional crop in the area and sometimes the trees can live for more than one hundred years. They have hermaphrodite flowers (blossom), surface roots and a very intense citrus aroma, which you soon notice as you walk around the farm. The avocado is a fruit from America and the lemon comes from Asia. Although both crops originate from different sides of the world, they have adapted very well to our region. Meanwhile, the Fino lemon is one of the most popular as it has up to a 50% juice content. The crops on our farm are meticulously nurtured, always making sure that they're in the best conditions. We harvest the avocados at the optimal ripening time, when their percentage of dry matter is greater than 20% and their fat yield greater than 10%, which guarantees the very best quality. We don't store the fruit in cold rooms, so it goes straight from the tree to your table. Your adoption is 10 years old and its productive life is around 30 years. For as long as you want to keep it and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew your adoption year after year. If your adoption dies, we will replace it with no additional cost assuring the delivery of your harvest from others. You do not have to commit to the consumption of the whole harvest. Each season you may decide what quantity to reserve and pay the maintenance in accordance with that amount. This way you will only pay for what you consume and will be able to sell any remaining harvest to others.
During the season, you will be able to receive the harvest that you are reserving now: a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 5 boxes. Once you paid for the adoption, you will be able to plan your shipments from your user account. Shipping format: __Box with 3kg of organic avocados (or in conversion to organic) + 1kg of organic Fino lemons__ * Hass (December - April): pear-shaped; medium size; rough, green skin that turns black when ripe; creamy texture; more intense flavour; higher amount of fat; and the most popular type of avocado * Lamb Hass (April - May): pear-shaped; medium-large size; rough, green skin that turns black when ripe; creamy texture; more intense flavour; greater amount of fat * Fino (October - April): oval shape; yellow or green skin with a thin and smooth rind; pale yellow flesh; bitter flavour; and approximately 50% juice content * Hass avocado certified with the European organic farming label since 2017; Lamb Hass avocado in conversion to organic farming since 2020; and Fino lemon certified with the European organic farming label since 1999 * They are not treated with wax or preservatives (you can use the peel) * Picked the day before shipment at their optimal point of ripeness and shipped in a cardboard box without plastics * The box includes some extra fruits, in case some of them arrive damaged * One kilo contains between 3 and 6 fruits * 1kg of lemons contains between 6 and 10 pieces * Store the avocados at room temperature until they ripen, and then place in the fridge so they last longer * It is a climacteric fruit, harvested when it reaches physiological ripeness but continues to evolve after harvesting until it is ready for consumption * If you keep them in a fresh and airy place, they can last 2 weeks in good condition (if you want them to last longer, you can keep them in the fridge) * Important: The fruits usually arrive hard, keep them at room temperature until they reach they are ready to eat; if you receive an alread ripe piece, you can put it in the fridge or eat it straight away * You'll see that the first lemons of the season may have a greenish hue, but over the weeks they'll take on the typical yellow tone of this variety The first thing you should do when you receive the box of avocados and lemons is inspect the fruit. Some of the avocados might be ready to eat, but you might have to wait a few days until the others are ready. This can range from three to ten days, depending on the ripening conditions. If you have to wait, keep them in a dry place. If most of them are already ripe, you can store them directly in the fridge. Their ripening will depend on the respiration rate of the fruit; placing them at a higher temperature speeds up respiration (and ripening), while a colder temperature will delay respiration. When they give slightly under your fingers, you can place them in the fridge and eat them a few days later. If for some reason they over-ripen, keep them cool and eat them as soon as possible. To eat, you need to separate the flesh from the skin by cutting them in half, removing the stone and using a spoon to scoop out the flesh. The lemons will be ready to use as soon as you receive them. Don't worry if you find a lemon with a slightly greener skin; if we've picked it from the tree, it will have already reached its point of ripeness with the right amount of juice. Use the contents of the box to make yourself a delicious guacamole!
När får du det?
The avocado harvest starts in the early winter, while the lemon season runs until the end of spring, so we'll start sending out the boxes at the beginning of winter.
