Adopt ett mangoträd that we cultivate under the Organic Farming regulations of the European Union since 2020. During the process of adoption you can choose a name that we will engrave on a plaque and hang on your tree. You adopt a mango tree of the Sensation variety, which we grow organically on our farms in Vélez-Málaga. We also grow other varieties of mangos, such as Osteen, Keitt and Palmer. The Sensation mango tree is originally from Florida (USA) and is known for its smaller size and smaller fruits. It's shorter than mango trees of other varieties and as such, doesn't usually exceed two metres in height. These trees withstand strong winds and lower temperatures very well, so they're usually located in the highest areas of the farms or on hillsides. Although they're very sensitive to fruit flies, which makes them more difficult to grow, we chose this variety because consumers love the excellent flavor of the fruits. The main problem for this variety is the *Ceratitis capitata*, or Mediterranean fruit fly. This pest causes huge damage as the fly takes a tiny bite into the fruit and introduces its larvae. The damage is seen two to three weeks after the bite, when the larvae have tunnelled through the fruit. To combat this pest, we place traps throughout the farm covered with a food-based bait specialised in capturing *Ceratitis Capitata*. This bait emits natural volatile compounds, especially organic acids, and is excellent at attracting adult flies, especially females. We use this selective method as an alternative to other poisons. I have a deep-rooted conviction about the benefits of using natural methods in agriculture. And these benefits are reflected in the final product and the local flora and fauna. That's why while I was studying agronomy, I convinced my family to take the plunge towards securing the organic farming label. And the conversion period ended in 2020, so we already have this quality certificate. The productive life of ett mangoträd is around 30 years. For as long as you want to keep it and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew your adoption year after year. If your mangoträd dies, we will replace it with no additional cost assuring the delivery of your harvest from other trees. A mangoträd from our farm produces an average of 9kg each season. You do not have to commit to the consumption of the whole harvest. Each season you may decide what quantity to reserve and pay the maintenance in accordance with the amount you reserve. This way you will only pay for what you consume and we can plan and sell the remaining harvest amount to others.
During the season, you will be able to receive the harvest that you are reserving now: a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 3 boxes. Some pieces might be ready to eat. The Sensation mango is very delicate as it ripens faster than other varieties. However, you might have to wait a few days until they're ready to eat. This waiting time can range from three to twenty days, depending on the variety and the ripening conditions. If you have to wait, keep the mangos in a dry place. If most of them are already ripe, you can store them directly in the fridge. Their ripening will depend on the respiration rate of the fruit; placing them at a higher temperature speeds up respiration (and ripening), while a colder temperature will delay it. When they give slightly under your fingers and begin to release their aroma, you can place them in the fridge and eat them a few days later. If for some reason they over-ripen, you can freeze the flesh to make smoothies or other recipes in the future, dehydrate it, or make jam with it. To eat, you need to separate the flesh from the skin, either by peeling the fruit or by cutting the flesh into cubes. The Sensation variety produces a characteristic fruit with a better size and a weight under 500 grams. This size makes it perfect to eat in one go without it filling you up too much. It also has a striking dark plum red skin colour, as well as a uniquely exotic flavour. I must admit that it's my favourite variety of mango. You might receive some very small mangos in your box, which are hard to find in shops as they normally have no commercial value, but they are absolutely delicious! These 'baby' mangos come from flowers that failed to pollinate properly, so the fruit could fully develop but without a stone. Not all boxes will include them, but if you do try them, please let me know what you think! The mangos from our farm have an excellent quality thanks to the care with which they are grown. You'll receive them very fresh due to the proximity between the farm and the consumer. We only pick them when they reach between 8 and 12 degrees Brix, so they have a spectacular level of sweetness. We don't store our mangos in cold rooms and they'll go from the tree to your home in just a few hours.
