Vad adopterar du?

You adopt en bananväxt from our farm in Villa de Mazo (Spanien). The cultivation here is certified as organic by the European Union as of 2018. When placing the adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your bananväxt. We've been growing organically certified Cavendish bananas since 2015. This crop originally came from Southeast Asia, it then spread to Africa, and then from Equatorial Guinea to the Canary Islands thanks to Portuguese sailors. Your banana tree is on the island of La Palma, on the La Mocanera farm, but as it would be impossible to supply you with perfectly ripe bananas all year round from here, you'll receive bananas from several of our partners' farm. Each of these farms are also located in La Palma and Tenerife, all with organic certification. The Canaries are an archipelago formed by seven islands off the northwest coast of Africa. The orography is very steep. In fact, Spain's highest mountain is located in the Canary Islands. We enjoy a subtropical climate here and we're the closest point to continental Europe where bananas are grown. Banana trees in the Canary Islands call for a lot of work. They're an artisanal and very manual crop that is cultivated almost without without mechanisation, , and which needs continuous care. What's more, they're found on a complicated terrain, often on small family-run farms, with climate conditions that aren't alw, and whichays favourable. In these conditions, the plants must work hard and fight to survive, even more so when they're organic. The battle to capture nutrients, find water, withstand strong winds and fight off pests and diseases results in bananas that are very different to those from traditional banana-growing areas. Ours are more delicate, sometimes uglier, less productive but, most importantly, more flavoursome. We say that our agriculture is 'slow', so it fits in with the slow food movement, as the conditions call for the bananas to stay on the plant for longer until they're ripe. Canary Island bananas need to remain on the plant for six months, compared to three months for other bananas, this vastly improves their flavour. Things that grow fast aren't good, as everything needs time in nature. We're in no hurry; the banana trees have taught us that. Your adoption is 6 years old and its productive life is 30 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops being able to produce for any reason, we will replace it with an other, and we guarantee your delivery from the produce of others for that season. Your bananväxt produces an average of 30kg of ekologiska bananer från Kanarieöarna each season. You do not have to commit to ordering the entire harvest though. Each season you can decide how much you want to reserve, and you pay the maintenance cost according to that amount. This way you only pay for what you plan to consume, and we can offer any surplus harvest to others.

Vad får du?

During harvest season you can progressively receive the quantity of harvest that you reserve at the moment of adoption. Shipping format: __2,5kg box of organic Canary Island bananas__ * Cavendish: a sweeter and more aromatic flavour than other bananas, with dark speckles on the skin * The skin of the Canary Island banana is very sensitive and blackens easily when knocked or in low temperatures; however, the black specks on the skin aren't a sign of rot * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 2018 * Harvest on request, shipped without wax or preservative treatments in a cardboard box without plastics * The box includes some extra fruits, in case some of them arrive damaged * One kilo contains between 5 and 8 fruits (the box contains between 12 and 20 fruits depending on the size) * If you keep them in a fresh and airy place, they can last up to 7 days in good condition * It is a climacteric fruit which is harvested when it reaches physiological maturity; after being picked from the tree it then continues to ripen until it has reached its optimum point for consumption

När får du det?

People say that each island in the Canaries is a microcontinent due to the huge climatic differences within very short distances. This is ideal for us, as it means that we can produce bananas all year round, both from Tenerife and from La Palma, harvesting them at their optimal point of ripeness.
