You adopt ett apelsinträd from our farm in Lora del Río (Spanien). Cultivation certified organic by the European Union since 2014. During the process of adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your apelsinträd. We grow three varieties of early-ripening oranges at Cortijo La Palmosa, which means that we produce fruit from mid-autumn to late winter. Our farm is located in the fertile Guadalquivir Valley, an ideal area for growing oranges. Our oranges fall into two groups, Navel (Navelina and Navel Late) and Valencia (Salustiana). The Valencia group is also known as a white orange, even though it still has a vibrant orange colour! Navels originated from a natural mutation in 1820 at a monastery in Brazil. You can tell them apart from other varieties as they have a 'navel' on the bottom of the fruit, hence their name. They're generally easy to peel, may have some seeds, and boast a sweet and intense flavour. Valencia (white) oranges are older and are thought to date back to nineteenth-century in California. And they don't have a navel. They produce a very rich juice with low acidity, although they're also very good to eat as a fruit. Orange trees differ from other citrus trees because they have greener and narrower leaves, bloom between April and May, reach a height of about three metres, and look the same when there's no fruit on the branches. The variety you receive will depend on the date you order the box. This farm is located in Lora del Río (Andalusia, Spain), between the Hornachuelos Nature Park (where the irrigation water comes from) and the valley of the Guadalquivir River, which is an important orange-growing region in Seville. There are hot summers and mild winters here, with an average of almost 3,000 hours of sunshine a year. This microclimate, along with certified organic production since 2014, means that we can grow well-sized oranges with the excellent flavour typical of Seville oranges. In the same box you'll receive Star Ruby grapefruits. These grapefruits and lemons are very juicy and have been grown organically at another of our farms, Cortijo Ana Maria (in Malaga), since 2014. The Star Ruby grapefruit has a sweeter juice than other varieties. Grapefruit trees aren't very tall and don't exceed a height of three to four metres. They flower in the month of April, when the aroma of blossom permeates the air. Meanwhile, the lemon trees are robust, prolific and medium-sized (as they are still growing), and don't grow taller than two to three metres. The Fino variety is one of the most widely grown in Spain. It flowers twice a year and when it's harvested while the fruit is still green, it's known as a Rodrejo lemon (it's ripe but still not yellow because it hasn't received enough cold). Your adoption is 9 years old and its productive life is around 30 years. For as long as you want to keep it and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew your adoption year after year. If your adoption dies, we will replace it with no additional cost assuring the delivery of your harvest from others. The average yield is 60kg of ekologiska apelsiner, grapefrukt och citroner each season. You do not have to commit to the consumption of the whole harvest. Each season you may decide what quantity to reserve and pay the maintenance in accordance with that amount. This way you will only pay for what you consume and will be able to sell any remaining harvest to others.
During the season, you will be able to receive the harvest that you are reserving now: a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 4 boxes. Once you paid for the adoption, you will be able to plan your shipments from your user account. Shipping format: __Box of 6kg of oranges, 3kg of grapefruits and 1kg of lemons__ * Navelina and Navelate oranges (November-March): with their typical navel at the bottom, perfect both for juice and for eating directly, at the beginning of the season they will be a bit more tart, becoming sweeter as the season progresses * Salustiana oranges (January) perfect for a balanced juice in tanginess and sweetness * Star Ruby grapefruit (December-early April): slightly flattened balloon shape, thick yellowish peel, ruby (reddish) flesh full of juice, slightly bitter taste and usually seedless * Fino lemon (October-April): oval shape; yellow or green skin with a thin and smooth rind; pale yellow flesh; bitter flavour * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 2014 * We do not store the fruit in cold chambers, they go directly from the tree to your doorstep * Our trees are not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in appearance and size * One kilo of oranges contains between 7 and 9 fruits * One kilo of grapefruits contains between 3 and 6 fruits * One kilo of lemons contains between 5 and 10 fruits * If you keep them in a fresh and airy place, they can last 2-3 weeks in good condition (if you want them to last longer, you can keep them in the fridge) * You'll see that the first lemons of the season may have a greenish hue, but over the weeks they'll take on the typical yellow tone of this variety
