Aurélien Pourcel
I am Aurélien Pourcel, the fourth generation on the Lacay farm. Since I was a child, I wanted to come and work on the family farm but while bringing added value. Passionate about business, with my sister I developed the sale on the farm. After my business studies, I went to live in Australia for a year. I was able to discover a new country and a new way of working. Then I went to work in England for a few months to finally come back to my roots on the family farm to develop the commercial part. This was also in response to a desire to break away from the traditional distribution channels and to be able to sell our products directly to the consumer. Today we control our product from production to the sale to our customers and it is a real pleasure to be able to exchange about our profession with outside people. My mother, Claire, is in charge of the processing part of the farm, my father, Patrick, is in charge producing the prunes. Together with my sister, I take care of the administrative tasks as well as the sale of the products. Even if working as a family is never easy, we have found a balance that allows us to move forward together with the same vision. CrowdFarming is the perfect answer to this vision of wanting to get closer to our consumers and to offer them a traditional quality that cannot be found in supermarkets. CrowdFarming gives us the chance to offer our products to a large community of people which would have been impossible without all our efforts to develop our activities.
Ferme du Lacay
"Lacay" in patois (French dialect) means "duck pond" since we had a pond so that the ducks would not access the Lot River which passes close to the farm. Our farm (la Ferme du Lacay) was bought by my great-grandfather in the early 1920s. It was then my grandfather who took over the farm and developed the cultivation of pruniers d'Ente to make prunes. My father took over the farm in the early 90's and we now work together as a family with my mother and sister. We are a typical Lot et Garonne farm. On our land orchards of plum trees are cultivated. They are registered in the "Identification Géographique Protégée" (PGI) (see the definition on the previous page) and certified Organic Agriculture for 7 years. We strive to process as many plums as possible during the harvest. Thus, plums that are damaged or too small are transformed to make plum brandy (to be consumed in moderation) with the help of a neighbouring distiller. Then we use the waste to make compost. We are also fortunate to have a river nearby so that we can irrigate our plum trees during heat waves thanks to pumping stations. We irrigate with the help of small hose reels that we have made on the farm. My grandfather being a handyman, was able to make these small reels that allow us to irrigate only at the foot of the trees with the quantities we want. We attach great importance to respect for nature and our trees, which is why we have switched to organic farming. We treat our plum trees with simple and natural products such as clay, which acts as a protective barrier against insects. Our whole family works on the farm full time. My parents, Patrick and Claire, are in charge of the production and processing of the organic prunes we offer. My sister, Eva and I manage product sales and communication. Both of us studied in the field of commerce to be able to develop direct sales on the farm and thus become independent from the wholesalers in our sector.
