You adopt a tomato plant from our farm in Valencia (Spanien). When placing the adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your tomato plant. You adopt a tomato plant of the Marmalindo variety that we grow on our family farm in Bétera, Valencia (Spain). The plants grow outdoors and enjoy the sun, without greenhouses. We do a staggered planting throughout spring. This means that we can extend the harvest season, collecting the first tomatoes at the beginning of June and the last ones at the end of September. The growth rate of the tomato plant accelerates as temperatures go up and the days get longer. Each week, we eliminate the offshoots or sprouts found in the axils of the main stem. We control the growth of weeds by hand, especially in the initial growth phase so that they don't compete with the tomato plants. Pests are controlled using chromatic traps and pheromone sex confusion traps. We also use leaf treatments with *Bacillus thuringiensis* to control caterpillars. As a result, we grow environmentally friendly tomatoes and we completely avoid the use of chemically synthesised pesticides. Growing outdoors and under our strict organic principles has its pros and cons. The pros include better flavour thanks to the direct sunlight, the elimination of plastics, and the luxury of working outdoors. As cons, we should admit that this form of cultivation reduces output and that some tomato plants are eaten by rabbits when they're growing. What's more, we have to spend a lot of time controlling competitive weeds and we find that the tomatoes can get scorched on sunny days. In your box you receive the ingredients that form the basis of one of the most traditional summer dishes in Spanish cuisine: Gazpacho. That's why we include a tin of our EVOO made from olives grown on our other farm, Campillo de Julia. Since we don't grow garlic or onions ourselves, we work together with a farmer friend who also offers his harvest on CrowdFarming - Finca Quixote. Finca Quixote was founded in 2001 on the basis of two fundamental pillars: respect for the land and the search for innovation in growing food. Accordingly, they obtained their first organic certificate in 2003 and today they cultivate their land under Demeter regulations.
