You adopt 10m² of a vegetable garden plot from our farm in Ispica (Italien). The cultivation here is certified as organic by the European Union as of 1992. The vegetables you receive are the result of meticulous work on our farm. They are grown very close to the sea, within a nature reserve - the Longarini Reserve - where only organic cultivation is permitted. Near the land where we produce our vegetables there are flamingos, herons, ducks and seagulls, with whom we like to share the space and part of the produce that we cultivate. One of the great advantages of our area is the very high temperatures, especially in summer, as well as the direct exposure to the sun, which allows our vegetables to ripen perfectly. We do not use greenhouses, which cause the production of large amounts of nitrogen, as well as ruining the local landscape that in many areas consists of nature reserves and protected areas. The sea breeze mitigates the climate on the land's surface, and stabilises the humidity in the area. At our farm we grow namibia carrots, nicola potatoes, gloria aubergines, assilla onions, and sirelyan tomatoes. The__ carrot __ (*Daucus carota*) was originally not orange, as we know it today, but it was dark purple in colour. It arrived in Europe around 1100 thanks to the Arabs who planted it in Spain. Then Catherine de Medici brought them to Italy in 1200 and introduced them into the kitchens of the aristocracy. In the 1500s the purple carrot was very popular, but around 1600 there was a great decline of this vegetable, which was replaced by the orange carrot as it began to dominate the western market. It is a biennial herbaceous species, growing up to 100 cm high. In common parlance, carrot usually refers to the edible, orange-coloured part, which is the root. The __potato__ (*Solanum tuberosum*) has its origins in Peru, Bolivia and Mexico, where it has been cultivated since the Aztec and Inca civilisations. The first Europeans who tasted it likened it to the taste of chestnuts. At first, its name was 'papa', but in Europe it was called 'potato' because it was confused with the sweet potato of tropical America. The stem is ascending, branched and up to one metre high. The leaves are pinnate and matching. The corymb-shaped inflorescences are white, but sometimes pink or purple, depending on the variety. The fruit is a berry and very poisonous. The lower part of the stem generates the stolons, from which the tubers - the edible part of the plant - grow out of. The __aubergine__ (*Solanum melongena L.*) is a herbaceous, erect plant, that grows up to between 30 cm and just over a metre high. The large, solitary flowers are purplish or even white. The fruits are large, elongated or round berries, that are normally black, and are edible after cooking. The red aubergine is a relative of the potato that is similar in appearance to the aubergine, but its rounded fruit is coloured deep red like a tomato, so much so that it is mistaken for the latter. It is cultivated mainly in Africa and Asia. The __onion __(*Allium cepa L*.) lives underground, and consists of modified leaves which have an epidermis (protective layer). It is a biennial herbaceous plant whose life cycle, in cultivation, is interrupted at one year in order to use it for consumption. It has superficial roots with leaves that swell at the basal portion, this is the edible part. It forms a long flower stalk bearing an umbrella-like inflorescence with yellowish-white flowers. The fruit is a capsule. Its main use is as a food and condiment. The cultivated __tomato__ is known botanically as Solanum lycopersicum, an annual herbaceous plant belonging to the Solanaceae family, whose red fruits are emblematic of Mediterranean cuisine and of Italy as a whole. The tomato plant has a climbing stem which is covered with hairy, pinnate pubescent leaves, which give off a characteristic and unmistakable fragrance: the leaves are rather large, irregular and each consists of several leaflets. Your vegetable garden plot produces an average of 56kg of summer organic veggie box each season. You do not have to commit to ordering the entire harvest though. Each season you can decide how much you want to reserve, and you pay the maintenance cost according to that amount. This way you only pay for what you plan to consume, and we can offer any surplus harvest to others.
During the season, you will be able to receive the harvest that you are reserving now: a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 8 boxes. They must first be cleaned, washed and dried well, placed in an airtight container and stored in the freezer for up to 3 months.
