Emanuele Perino
My name is Emanuele Perino, and since I was very little, I frequently lent a hand to our father when he spent his evenings honey-making. After studying IT and gaining work experience in different fields, I decided to 'leave the city' and return to live in the middle of the countryside, devoting body and soul to the family business. The corporate image and packaging were the first activities I dedicated myself to, in order to better understand what is behind a jar of honey. Now the administrative part is my daily bread, to which I add the nights of beehive transhumance during the season of production and honey extraction. My typical day varies depending on the season: in winter I devote myself more to administration and packaging in the laboratory, while I spend my summers 'immersed' in honeycombs in the honey extraction room. Like me, my two brothers, Filippo and Gianmarco, grew up in this world of bees, honey and markets. Our holidays were somehow always linked to bees and we often went hiking in the mountains to discover new pastures for our bees. After completing his music studies, Filippo threw himself headlong into the hives. He spends most of his days with them. From March to September, the work with bees knows no respite, while the rest of the year is taken up with laboratory processing: packaging, labelling and shipping. Gianmarco is the 'strong man' of the family and, since childhood, he has always had a passion for nature and working in the countryside. After his studies in agriculture, he continued his training in the world of tree-climbing and today he divides his time between this activity and managing the hives. Just as for our father, the passion for bees also sparked in us. When you come into contact with this wonderful insect and begin to discover its secrets, it is impossible not to fall in love with it: this is what drives us to pursue our mission every day. The difficulties are many and increasing, but we know how important this insect is for our planet and we do our best to safeguard it. We are happy to be part of CrowdFarming because we identify with the values of sustainability and respect for nature that are promoted here, and because we believe in short supply chains. We want to share our life amongst the bees with the CrowdFarmers and give them the opportunity to discover the tastes and scents of some of nature's unspoilt spots.
Apicoltura Le Querce
Our parents chose to call the company "Le Querce" after the ancient oak trees that surround our land. We are located in the village of Azeglio, which has a population of 1,200 and is situated within the Canavese morainic amphitheatre. We are right on the shores of Lake Viverone, amidst woodland and hills. The Canavese region, less well known than the neighbouring Langhe and Roero regions, is certainly an area worth discovering for its history, nature. We recommend visiting the Serra Morenica - the largest moraine hill in Europe - and its lakes originating from the retreat of prehistoric glaciers. There are excellent food products to try as well, such as Erbaluce wine, Tome and Salignun cheeses and Miasse (sheets of corn flour mixed with water cooked on a griddle). At the end of the 1970s, our aunt and uncle had two hives and lived in a small mountain village on the border between Piedmont and Valle d'Aosta. They practised a form of beekeeping that would be almost an understatement to be referred to as "heroic" today, as the hives were kept on a mountain terrace that could only be reached on foot along a narrow mule track. It was not possible to mechanise the activity, and every visit to the hives involved carrying everything on one's back from the house to the "banche" (as the terraces are called in dialect). Towards the end of the 80s, our aunt and uncle decided to leave the bees to our father, Pino who thus began his journey in Azeglio. At first it was a Sunday hobby for him, but after a few years the bee families began to multiply and the honey produced was so abundant that he decided, together with our mother Aurora, to establish the business. We children (Emanuele, Filippo and Gianmarco) grew up amongst bees, honey and the first markets. Over the following years, after various school and work experiences, we gradually joined the company and today we passionately carry on with the fruits of our parents' labours. In the company, therefore, all three brothers work together with our father. We have been certified organic for several years now. The hives are coloured with water-based paints, all the organic wax produced by the bees is re-circulated for the production of new combs and treatment against varroa is carried out using an organic acid. The hives are located in uncontaminated areas, far from the impact of humans. Our laboratory is energy self-sufficient thanks to a PV solar system.
