You do not enter into any long-term commitment: although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.
You adopt 20m² of a tomato field from our farm in Ispica (Italien). The cultivation here is certified as organic by the European Union as of 2001. Two of the great advantages of the area in which we are located are: the high temperatures (especially in summer), and the direct sunlight that we receive. These factors make it possible for our tomatoes to ripen perfectly without having to use greenhouses which cause the production of high quantities of nitrogen, as well as spoiling the local landscape that includes areas of nature reserves or protected areas. The tomato is a member of the Solanaceae family, a plant that stops developing after it has produced a certain number of flowers and leaves. The San Marzano and cherry varieties are especially known for this characteristic. The small, yellow flowers, grouped in clusters, are inserted on the internodes, on the opposite side of the leaves. Flowering takes place from the first stages. The term tomato is attributed to the Sienese botanist Pietro Andrea Mattioli who first documented the vegetable in Italy in 1544, where he called it mala aurea from the Latin "golden apples". The same botanist literally translated it into Italian as 'pomo d'oro' (golden apple) because of its characteristic golden yellow colour before the last stage of ripening. In italy, the tomato first appeared in 1596, as an ornamental plant for the homes of the North. Then twenty years later it reached the South where the favourable climate brought larger, orange-red fruits. They were so tempting that people were encouraged to eat them more and more. And that they did! They ate them raw or cooked, in sauce, fried in oil or in soups etc. The Italians of the South began to enjoy tomatoes almost a century before all other European people. Your tomato field produces an average of 6kg of organic tomatoes each season. With this amount we can produce around 1.05kg of dried organic tomatoes.
During the season, you will be able to receive the harvest that you are reserving now: a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 4 boxes. Once you have paid for the adoption, you will be able to plan your shipments from your user account. Shipping format: 1 x __organic chopped Ciappa tomatoes__ (400g bag) 1 x __organic oval Ciappa tomatoes__ (400g bag) 1 x __organic cherry tomatoes__ (250g bag) In the box you will receive __tomatoes of the San Marzano variety__ (also called Ciappa), an elongated oval variety, and the smaller, __round cherry tomato__, all of which are grown in open fields, picked at the right degree of ripeness, selected, washed, cut in half, salted and sun-dried in a hygienically controlled environment authorized by the relevant authorities. GMO-free and preservative-free, the organic sun-dried tomatoes are flat, hence the term “Ciappa”, translating to “flat” in Sicilian. The tomatoes have a fleshy, elastic appearance, a ruby red colour, an intense aroma and a long, lingering taste. The only ingredients we use are our organically grown tomatoes and salt. Our sun-dried tomatoes can be eaten simply dressed with extra virgin olive oil and herbs or used as ingredients in many recipes. The packaging used for our product is made of Pla, a biodegradable and compostable bioplastic that degrades rapidly in soil and water, and as such can be composted in wet waste. The label is made of recycled paper. The tomatoes can be stored for up to 12 months in the fridge at temperatures between 0-6 Cº, or for around 6 months if stored in a dry place away from heat and direct sunlight.

The harvesting and drying of the tomatoes takes place between June and August, but the product is available all year round, being shipped every end of the month from April to July.
