Adopt a rhubarb field from the farm "Steinmühlhof" in Münnerstadt (Duitsland) and receive your harvest in the form of Naturland organic rhubarb at home. Andreas will take care of your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you receive your harvest and you enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.

Wat adopteer je?

Adopt a rhubarb field that we cultivate under the Organic Farming regulations of the European Union since 1991. You are adopting __1m2 of an organic rhubarb field__ that is of the "Frambozen Rood" variety. The rhubarb plant originated in the Himalayas, from where it then gradually made its way to Europe via Russia. First the French and Dutch, then the English, and finally we Germans got a taste for it. It was particularly popular with our grandparents and great-grandparents! Before the Second World War, the area being cultivated with rhubarb in Germany was more than four times as high as it is today! Our variety originally comes from the Netherlands. It is very suitable both for direct consumption of the stalks and for juicing. You will notice the fruity aroma as soon as you open the box. The rhubarb's pulp is particularly tender, making it excellent for processing. Our plants are grown in a sunny to partially shady place, because those are the best conditions for them to thrive. They have about 1m2 of space in our field to fully develop. The rhubarb's first green leaves begin to sprout in the spring. At that point, we start to mill between the rows. We remove the weeds thus the soil can warm up better. That is how we create the best conditions for the plants to grow. Rhubarb needs a lot of water so that its stalks are juicy when they are finally harvested. The plant effectively absorbs the rain due to its funnel-shaped leaves. We also support plant growth using certified organic fertiliser. Rhubarb can be harvested by hand from May to mid-June. Then we sow another catch crop so that the soil remains fertile. The Steinmühlhof has been a member of the Naturland association since 1991, thus the rhubarb field has been certified ever since. Each rhubarb field bears an average of 5kg of Naturland organic rhubarb per season.

Wat krijg je?

Each season we will send you a box with: __5kg of Naturland organic rhubarb __(loose stalks, plastic-free packaging) Our rhubarb is an untreated natural product. That means the stalks may be of different sizes. Depending on the weight and size, there will be approximately 10 to 20 stalks in the harvest box (where 1 kg is made up of 1-4 stalks). We prepare the 5 kg box for you so that every size is represented. The stalks come straight from the field to your home carefully packaged in wood wool. If you are not going to use them right away, it is best to wrap the stalks in a damp cloth and store them in a cool place. That keeps the stalks fresh for longer, extending their shelf life. Nevertheless, consume the rhubarb quickly (within one week at most), because it contains a lot of water. The "Frambozen Rood” variety has an impressively fruity odour, which you will notice when you open the box, along with its tender pulp. Our rhubarb is a true allrounder in the kitchen: from fruity juice or syrup, heavenly baked goods and jams, to spicy sauces for accompanying your savory dishes. Our rhubarb can even be eaten raw unpeeled. Our tip: mix the diced rhubarb with a fresh garden salad. However, do keep in mind that rhubarb contains oxalic acid, hence so you should only consume it raw in manageable quantities. But don't worry: our bodies also produce oxalic acid, and we take it in with other foods – so we're used to it. Cooking before consumption will significantly reduce the oxalic acid. A little tip: Dairy products help your body to process the oxalic acid better. So, that has made rhubarb compote with cottage cheese (quark) or ice cream, or rhubarb sauce with vanilla pudding true classics of German cuisine, and they are soooo delicious!

Wanneer ontvang je het?

The rhubarb is harvested from mid-May to mid-June. We will always harvest the stalks fresh for you.
