Adopt a sweet potato field from "Sönkes Süßkartoffeln" in Bienenbüttel Ortsteil Rieste (Duitsland) and receive your harvest in the form of Bioland and organic sweet potatoes at home. The Farmer Sönke will take care of your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you receive your harvest and you enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.
Adopt a sweet potato field that we cultivate under the Organic Farming regulations of the European Union since 2017. You are adopting 4m² of our 2021 sweet potato field. On your 4m² there are 14 “Orleans” variety sweet potato plants from which we can harvest approx. 8kg of sweet potatoes for you. Since 2017, we have been growing our organic sweet potatoes on Lüneburg Heath, making us one of the pioneers in northern Germany. The small young plants are planted in a dam at the end of May. After that, we have to be careful that the sweet potatoes do not disappear under the weeds. So every two weeks, we drive our hoe through the sweet potato dams until the sweet potato leaves throw shade on the ground and prevent more weeds from growing. From the end of July, when the weather is nice and warm, the sweet potatoes will start to form underground. The sweet potato comes from a swelling of the roots, so you can easily see how the storage roots thicken from week to week. To do this, we irrigate the sweet potato plants so that the sweet tubers can develop nicely. At the end of September we cut off the long leaves to make the harvest easier and start harvesting at the beginning of October. The harvest must be over before the first frosts arrive. As harvesting sweet potatoes is quite laborious and we have to pull the tubers out of the ground very slowly and carefully, we spend around 14 working days harvesting. Fresh from the ground, the sweet potato must be treated like a raw egg. Its skin is very delicate, and this is also why a lot of manual work and sensitivity is required. From planting the cuttings, through harvesting, to washing, sorting and packing the harvested goods, a lot of manual work is needed across the board. After the harvest, our sweet potatoes rest in our beautiful, warm warehouse at 13-14°C. This gives them a more robust skin and can even be stored all year round. Sweet potatoes are becoming more and more popular, and because of their versatility, they are on the menu more often. Sweet potatoes probably originated in Central America, where they are believed to have been a staple food hundreds of years ago. Often, the sweet potatoes sold in Germany come from America. One of the main growing areas is North Carolina. From there, the sweet potatoes travel over 7,000km. And this is also a reason why we wanted to grow our favourite vegetable locally. All of our cultivation is ecological in accordance with the Bioland guidelines. This means that we do not use any pesticides or sprout inhibitors, and do not use plastic sheeting to bring on an early harvest. The plant remains in a natural environment and grows as it wants to grow. Each sweet potato field bears an average of 8kg of Bioland and organic sweet potatoes per season.
Each season we will send you: 8kg box of __Bioland and organic sweet potatoes__ (loose in a box) __Your harvest:__ You receive 8kg of loose sweet potatoes in a parcel with recyclable cushioning material. The sweet potatoes can be peeled or eaten with their skin. The tubers are completely untreated and only need to be washed once before serving. The Orleans variety has a nice orange pulp and tastes slightly sweet and mildly nutty. __Use:__ Whether as a side dish, as a gratin or as a quick and easy-to-roast sweet potato, prepare them how you want! Even baking is brilliant with the sweet potatoes. They can be used in both savoury and sweet dishes and are also ideal for diabetics. __Storage:__ The harvest always takes place in late autumn and the sweet potatoes can be kept for a good three months if stored in a dark, dry place. If the sweet potatoes start to sprout, you can simply snap the sprouts off and prepare the sweet potatoes as usual.

The harvest takes place at the beginning of October and, after a short period of downtime with a lot of warmth during which the starch in the sweet potatoes turns into sugar, you will receive your parcel at the beginning of November. We take particular care to harvest the sweet potatoes before the first severe frost, otherwise the tubers are difficult to store.
