Wat adopteer je?

You adopt 4m² of a mixed sweet potato and pumpkin plot from our farm in Bienenbüttel Ortsteil Rieste (Duitsland). The cultivation is certified as organic by the European Union as of 2017, and as Bioland as of 2017. Your 4m² are home to 10 sweet potato plants “Orleans” and 2 Hokkaido pumpkin plants of the "Solor" variety. Since 2017, we have been growing our organic sweet potatoes on Lüneburg Heath, making us one of the pioneers in northern Germany. The Sweet potato is from Central America and is still mainly grown in the Americas. Before long, it became clear that pumpkins were the perfect partners to grow alongside the sweet potatoes in our fields. Many of our machines can, after a brief conversion, also be used for pumpkin cultivation, while pumpkins and sweet potatoes also harmonise well together in the storage. By the way, pumpkins and sweet potatoes also make a great team in the kitchen. For these reasons, we have now firmly integrated the pumpkin into our crop rotation. The small young plants are planted in a dam at the end of May. The pumpkin seeds are sown at the end of May with a single-seed-drilling 3 cm deep into the soil. When sowing, we make sure to leave a large distance of 1.50m between the planting rows. That may sound like a lot, but the plant needs space and forms large leaves and tendrils quickly after germination. From the end of July, when the weather is nice and warm, the sweet potatoes will start to form underground. The sweet potato comes from a swelling of the roots, so you can easily see how the storage roots thicken from week to week. Beautiful large yellow flowers form on the pumpkin plants at the beginning of July. Bumblebees are particularly fond of flying to the large flowers to get covered in their abundant pollen. After a short flowering period, the flower closes again and finally forms the pumpkin fruit below the base of the flower. If the summer stays very dry, we use a sprinkler to supply the sweet potatoes and pumpkins with our well water. This is important in order to be able to harvest sufficiently large produce. At the end of September we cut off the long leaves to make the harvest easier and start harvesting at the beginning of October. The harvest must be over before the first frosts arrive. As harvesting sweet potatoes is quite laborious and we have to pull the tubers out of the ground very slowly and carefully, we spend around 14 working days harvesting. The pumpkin plant dies naturally and starts wilting. We harvest the fully grown pumpkins by hand and collect them in wooden boxes. Here we proceed very carefully to prevent the pumpkins on the bottom from getting bruised. This is followed by our quality control. Fresh from the ground, the sweet potato must be treated like a raw egg. From planting the cuttings, through harvesting, to washing, sorting and packing the harvested goods, a lot of manual work and sensitivity is required across the board. After the harvest, our sweet potatoes rest in our beautiful, warm warehouse at 13-14°C. This gives them a more robust skin and can even be stored all year round. The pumpkins are washed after harvest and prepared for shipment. The pumpkins can be kept for a good three months in a dark and dry room at 12-14°C. All of our cultivation is ecological in accordance with the Bioland guidelines. This means that we do not use any pesticides or sprout inhibitors, and do not use plastic sheeting to bring on an early harvest. The plant remains in a natural environment and grows as it wants to grow. Each mixed sweet potato and pumpkin plot produces an average of undefinedkg of Bioland organic autumn veggies per season.

Wanneer ontvang je het?

The sweet potatoes are harvested at the beginning of October. They are then stored for a short time with plenty of heat so that the starch contained in the flesh converts to sugar. We take special care to harvest the sweet potatoes before the first heavy frost, otherwise the tubers are difficult to store. We harvest the pumpkins at the end of September. They are then washed and checked for our high quality standards. In October they are sorted and packed. When the days get shorter and colder, you receive your mixed box from us at home.
