Adopt a beehive from the apiary "O'Picouto" in A Carballal (Spanje) and receive your harvest in the form of organic honey at home. Aroa will take care of your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. As the production coming from one beehive is big, the adoption is shared among various people. If you wish to have a bigger share, you may adopt more than once. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you receive your harvest and you enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.

Wat adopteer je?

You adopt a beehive from our apiary in A Carballal (Spanje). Apiculture certified organic by the European Union since 2016. You adopt a hive of *Apis mellifera iberiensis* bees, the Mediterranean bee species native to the Iberian Peninsula. Each of these colonies can reach up to eighty thousand bees including drones, workers and the queen bee. Each inhabitant is essential for the hive’s development. The queen bee is the only one capable of laying female and male eggs, thanks to the fact that she feeds exclusively on royal jelly, making her able to fully develop her reproductive system. The female egg hatches the worker bees, which depending on their age will carry out some tasks or others, such as going out for nectar and pollen or taking care of the larvae that will soon be new bees. Meanwhile, the male egg hatches the drones, who fertilise the virgin queens and, despite their reputation as being lazy, take on tasks such as carrying water. We take care of our bees following EU organic production criteria. In addition to a honey free of chemical products and residues, we conduct a fully sustainable and environmentally friendly production, which helps develop the native wild forest. Unlike conventional beekeeping, we don't stimulate the reproduction of the hive with artificial food, as we prefer to leave abundant reserves of honey, which give the hive confidence to develop. This means that the colony reproduces at its own pace without any artificial influences. The apiaries are located in mountain areas, surrounded by native vegetation and far from large settlements or areas of intensive farming. This is key to producing quality organic honey, in compliance with the requirements of the Regulatory Council of Galicia. What's more, every year they visit us at the end of each harvest to collect samples of honey, which they then analyse and certify that they're free of residues. Only then do we package our honey. This is a family-run apiary where we produce artisanal and organic honey from mountain areas, made from bees that work at extreme temperatures surrounded by native flowers. Your adoption is 6 months years old and its productive life is around 1 years. For as long as you want to keep it and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew your adoption year after year. If your adoption dies, we will replace it with no additional cost assuring the delivery of your harvest from others. Each beehive produces an average of 20kg of organic honey per season. 6 CrowdFarmers share an adoption who receive a box with 3.42 kg of organic honey.

Wat krijg je?

Each season we will send you a box with: 6 x __Organic honey Ouro Mouro __ (570 g, glass jars) Each springtime is unique and unpredictable, so we can't predict how much honey of each type you'll receive, as it depends on the year's harvest. Due to the location of our apiaries and the surrounding vegetation, we usually produce the following honeys: * Bramble, chestnut and heather multi-flower honey: dark with reddish hues, sweet and intense flavour. This honey crystallises easily, taking on a lighter, cream-coloured hue * Oak honey: our bees don't make this honey from the nectar of flowers, but from the honeydew secreted by the Pyrenean Oak. It's jet black, less sweet than other honeys, and with a high content of mineral salts and iron Our honey is packaged raw, so it hasn't been subjected to industrial overheating processes that lower the quality of the honey by destroying the enzymes and altering its composition. Crystallisation is a natural process of honey, so don't worry if your honey crystallises. Its texture will change slightly, but it's just as tasty. Only unheated honey crystallises, so it's an indicator of quality. To preserve your honey, keep it at room temperature, away from direct heat sources. Babies under 12 months shouldn't be given honey. Nutrition Facts labels can be downloaded in 'Additional Analyses'.

Wanneer ontvang je het?

Our multi-flower honey is harvested in summer, while our oak honey is usually harvested between September and October. Once we harvest the honey, we carefully fill each jar by hand and send you the honey from your hive in the month of December.
