Adopt a prickly pear cactus from the farm "La Zahurda" in Comares (Spanje) and receive your prickly pear at home. Jessica will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.

Wat adopteer je?

You adopt a prickly pear cactus from our farm in Comares (Spanje). The cultivation here is certified as organic by the European Union as of 2019. When placing the adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your prickly pear cactus. The prickly pear cactus, with the scientific name *Opuntia ficus indica*, a native plant of Mexico, arrived in Spain in the mid-16th century. It is regarded as one of the first species brought from the "New World" by the Spaniards. Introduced in the Peninsula to make less productive and drier areas more profitable, due to its peculiarity of adapting to drought conditions. It was used as a type of hedge or to mark the boundary of farms, and there was a time when its produce became an essential part of the diet of the poorest people in Spain. The prickly pear is a bushy plant belonging to the cactus family. It has no leaves and is made up of a set of branches called "shovels", which are extensions of the stem of the plant itself. These stems, which are joined together, are flat, slightly oval and green in colour. There are two types of thorns, one long and hard and the other shorter and thinner, with a fuzzy appearance. We grow about 1,000 prickly pears of the yellow variety on our farm. They are currently 1.5 m tall but can grow up to 3 m high and flower in spring. It is a very resistant dry crop. The prickly pear cactus is able to produce an abundant amount of organic matter using a lower quantity of water. We are happy to be able to revive a crop that is currently in decline because of a pest that has decimated it, the cochineal. Preventing the loss of this traditional crop is one of the objectives of this project. Your adoption is 4 years old and its productive life is 20 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops being able to produce for any reason, we will replace it with an other, and we guarantee your delivery from the produce of others for that season. Your prickly pear cactus produces an average of 6kg of prickly pear each season. You do not have to commit to ordering the entire harvest though. Each season you can decide how much you want to reserve, and you pay the maintenance cost according to that amount. This way you only pay for what you plan to consume, and we can offer any surplus harvest to others.

Wat krijg je?

During harvest season you can progressively receive the quantity of harvest that you reserve at the moment of adoption. Shipping format: __2kg box of prickly pear__ * Yellow Prickly Pear: greenish skin with yellowish and purplish tones, medium size, firm outer rind, oval shape, may bear thorns, sweet taste and gelatinous texture, yellow flesh with small seeds * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 2019 * Picked the day before shipment at their optimal point of ripeness and shipped in a cardboard box without plastics * Our farm is not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in appearance and size * One kilo contains between 8 and 12 fruits * If you keep them in a fresh and airy place, they can last up to 7 days in good condition (if you want them to last longer, you can keep them in the fridge) The fruit is ready to eat as soon as you receive the box. The fruit is peeled by cutting it in several places and extracting the pulp. There are many ways of enjoying it: plain, smoothies, ice cream, salads, marmalade, etc. Caution: This fruit may contain thorns. When picking them, we try to remove all the thorns that cover their skin. To do this, we rub them with a natural brush until all thorns disappear from the surface and run them under water to see if any remain. There may be a few thorns, so we advise you to be careful when peeling them.

Wanneer ontvang je het?

The prickly pear is a crop that can only be harvested once a year during the summer; it is harvested at the beginning of July and ends in mid-September.
