Adopt 7m² of a sweet potato field from "La Huerta con Sangha" in Algarrobo (Spanje) and receive your harvest in the form of organic sweet potatoes at home. Sangha will take care of your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you receive your harvest and you enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.
You adopt 7m² of a sweet potato field from our farm in Algarrobo (Spanje) that we cultivate following the Organic Farming regulations of the European Union since 2013. The sweet potato has its origins in Central America. Its favorite climate is tropical and subtropical, with lots of sun. The sowing is through cuttings that take root by the buds located in the nodes of the plant, which must be buried to produce the precious tubers. In Andalusia, it is cultivated with the arrival of spring, once the rains stop, since it needs little humidity to keep and grow. The sweet potato has a long history in our land, the region of Axarquia (Malaga), since it was the first place where it was successfully cultivated far from America. Christopher Columbus introduced it through the port of Seville, and from there it was distributed throughout the old world. It was quickly consolidated as a staple product in the cuisine of that time, and today it acquires a very relevant gastronomic and historical value, having its own book: 'From the Indies to the Mediterranean, the sweet potato in the Axarquia, scoop of the New World', by Jesús Moreno. Nowadays its production has been quite reduced, and there are few farmers who maintain the tradition of cultivating this rich tropical delicacy that has more than 500 years of history. Our sweet potatoes are grown following the traditions of our ancestors, but adapted to the new times to make an ecological and environmentally friendly production, since 2013. A sweet potato field from our farm produces an average of 15kg each season. You do not have to commit to the consumption of the whole harvest. Each season you may decide what quantity to reserve and pay the maintenance in accordance with the amount you reserve. This way you will only pay for what you consume and we can plan and sell the remaining harvest amount to others.
During harvest season you can progressively receive the quantity of harvest that you reserve at the moment of adoption. You will receive a minimum of 2 boxes, which can be increased up to 3 boxes according to your needs. Shipping format: __5kg box of sweet potatoes__ * Beauregard: Its skin and pulp is orange, its shape is long, medium to large size and its taste is between potato, carrot, almond and chestnut, and a sweetness between carrot and pumpkin * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 2013 * The box includes some extra sweet potatoes, in case some of them arrive damaged * Our plants are not a screw factory: each potato is unique in appearance and size * One kilo contains between 2 and 6 sweet potatoes (the box contains between 15 and 25 fruits depending on the size) * If you keep them in a fresh and airy place, they can last 1 year in good condition We can recommend a multitude of recipes, but we highlight the traditional ones of the Axarquia: roasted, cooked with cinnamon, matalauva, cloves and cane honey, in compote, or as part of the typical "borrachuelos", traditional Easter and Christmas sweets in Malaga, which are shaped like a pastry and are stuffed for frying.
