Adopt an apple tree from the "Know Jou Bio" farm in Torrefarrera (Spanje) and receive your organic apples at home. Ramón will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.

Wat adopteer je?

You adopt an apple tree from our farm in Torrefarrera (Spanje). The cultivation here has been certified as organic by the European Union since 2015. When placing the adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your apple tree. Our organic apples are grown on the farms of Alpicat, Roselló and Torrefarrera (Cataluña, Spain), found on the plateau that links the municipalities of these 3 villages, with wonderful views of the plain and the city of Lleida. The plots are surrounded by forest and a natural water channel from the Pyrenees. This is a tree that produces one of today's most popular fruits, as it has done since ancient times. In the Bible, it was the famous forbidden fruit that forced Man to leave paradise after he gave in to his temptations. What's more, pre-biblical accounts spoke of this fruit in Greek mythology (the Apple of Discord). We also know that in the twelfth century BC this fruit tree grew on the fertile banks of the River Nile. And even archaeological remains have been found that show that our Neolithic ancestors ate this fruit. As you can imagine, it's difficult to know the exact origin of a tree with so much history. In fact, we still don't know today whether the tree is native to Asia or to the Caucasus. We do know that the Romans cultivated it in Spain and from here it was taken to the Americas by the colonisers. The apple tree (*Malus domestica*) belongs to the Rosaceae family, as do the pear, almond and peach trees, to name just a few. Its amazing adaptability to different climates and soils makes it one of the most widespread crops worldwide. We grow the Golden Delicious variety, which arose from a chance seedling in the USA of two other varieties (Grimes Golden and Golden Reinette). This tree needs about 600 mm of water. We let the grass grow around our crop during the spring and we mow it in the summer, leaving it as a layer of organic matter and mulch. We control pests throughout the year with biological pest control, pheromone traps and products authorised by the Organic Farming Council. In the winter, we prune the trees and fertilise them with manure from a neighbouring organic livestock farm, making sure that they reach the spring in perfect conditions. The biodiversity on our farms and in nearby forests encourages a fantastic ecosystem teeming with beneficial insects that help us to naturally control potential pests and diseases. Water from the Pyrenees helps our trees to be healthy and produce top quality fruit, but, as it is a scarce commodity, we optimise its use by using drip irrigation. We have ponds to gather rainwater, which provide shelter for a wide variety of native fauna. Your adoption is 7 years old and its maximum lifespan is 15 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops producing for any reason, we will replace it with another, and guarantee you the delivery from the production of other units. Your apple tree produces an average of 2.5kg of organic apples each season. You do not have to commit to ordering the entire harvest though. Each season you can decide how much you want to reserve, and you pay the maintenance cost according to that amount. This way you only pay for what you plan to consume, and we can offer any surplus harvest to others.

Wat krijg je?

During the season, you will be able to receive the harvest that you are reserving now: a minimum of 1 and a maximum of 1 boxes. Once you have paid for the adoption, you will be able to plan your shipments from your user account. Shipping format: __2,5kg box of organic apples__ * Golden Delicious: greenish-yellow skin with small dark spots known as lenticels, which it breathes through; round and regular in shape, it's a tasty, sweet, crunchy and very aromatic apple * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 2015 * One kilo contains between 6 and 11 fruits * Perfect for eating whole as a snack at home or on the go; there are a multitude of recipes that use the Golden Delicious for sweet or savoury dishes * The fruits are harvested when having reached their full maturity, as they cannot be harvested gradually though, we store the fruit in cold storage and send it to you little by little * If you keep them in a fresh and airy place, they can last up to 5 days in good condition (if you want them to last longer, you can keep them in the fridge)

Wanneer ontvang je het?

We collect our apples from late August to September. As this fruit can't be harvested progressively, we store the apples in cold rooms and sell them gradually.
