You adopt 20m² of a vegetable plot from our farm in Albessen (Duitsland). The cultivation here is certified as organic by the European Union as of 1987. Vegetable cultivation is not typical here in this region, but we want to promote and preserve a diverse cultural landscape. Our vegetables are grown in a varied crop rotation of winter grain, spring grain, potatoes, clover-grass mixture and vegetables. In this way we can enable a circular economy without using conventional nitrogen fertilisers. This not only increases biodiversity, but plants become more resistant if they are not artificially pushed to grow fast. This in turn reduces the pressure from pests and diseases. The work for the contents of your vegetable box starts with the preparation of the vegetable field. This is done by tilling to incorporate the catch and cover crops and loosening the soil as gently as possible to create a good seedbed for the plants. After sowing the open-pollinated (non-hybrid) varieties or planting small plants, labour-intensive weeding follows. This is done by hand and tractor. In autumn, the vegetables are harvested, which is also very labour-intensive because it involves a lot of work by hand. The vegetables are then stored in large crates in cold storage and are washed and sorted as needed over the winter. We grow the Rodelika carrot variety. Carrots belong to the Umbelliferae family (*Apiaceae*). It is a seedfast variety. It has strong foliage and is growing fast, which quickly protects the soil from evaporation. Furthermore, it is also suitable for cultivation on heavier soils. We chose the Robuschka beetroot variety. It is a seedfast variety with strong foliage, which is layed down on the ground in hot weather and is therefore relatively resistant to drought. Beetroot is a cultivated form of the beet and belongs to the foxtail family (*Amaranthaceae*). Like the carrot, the parsnip belongs to the Umbelliferae family (*Apiaceae*). The starchy root was cultivated a lot in Europe before the arrival of potatoes. The Aromata variety is seedfast, can be cultivated on heavy soil and closes gaps in the row well. The Hokkaido pumpkin of the Red Kuri variety is a hardy seedfast variety. Squash and pumpkin plants are thermophilic and belong to the gourd family. The pumpkin is a climbing plant that quickly covers the entire ground and creates its own microclimate underneath. The flowers are edible and serve as food for bees and other insects. Kale belongs to the cruciferous family (*Brassicaceae*) and is a type of cabbage that is mainly cultivated in northern Germany. In contrast to other cabbage, it does not form a head, but loose curly leaves around a stem. The Westerländer Winter variety is seedfast. We harvest the lower leaves first and leave the top leaves on the plant. The plant can continue to grow and we can harvest fresh kale from the end of august until february.. White cabbage, red cabbage and savoyall belong to the cruciferous family (*Brassicaceae*). We decided on organically bred hybrid varieties because they grow more reliably under our conditions. In order to ensure a long harvest period, we cultivate several varieties. We grow several potato varieties, including three waxy varieties (Belana, Allians, Goldmarie), all of which do very well with the conditions in the Palatinate hills. Potatoes belong to the nightshade family (*Solanaceae*). Onions belong to the onion family (Alliaceae) and require little fertiliser. They are also characterised by a very good shelf life. We grow yellow and red varieties. By adopting a vegetable plot you can receive up to 55kg of colourful Bioland organic winter vegetable mix each season. You do not have to commit to ordering the entire harvest though. Each season you can decide how much you want to reserve, and you pay the maintenance cost according to that amount. This way you only pay for what you plan to consume, and we can offer any surplus harvest to others.
During the season, you will be able to receive the harvest that you are reserving now: a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 5 boxes. Once you have paid for the adoption, you will be able to plan your shipments from your user account.
