Adopt an watermelon field from "Finca Quixote" in Llanos del Caudillo (Spanje) and receive your harvest in the form of Demeter organic watermelon at home. Carlos will take care of your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you receive your harvest and you enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.
Adopt an watermelon field (6m²) that we cultivate under the Organic Farming and Demter regulations of the European Union since 2016. Finca Quixote was founded in 2001 on the basis of two fundamental pillars: respect for the land and the search for innovation in growing food. Accordingly, we obtained our first organic certificate in 2003 and today we cultivate our land under Demeter regulations. *Citrullus lanatus* is the scientific name of the plant that produces the watermelon, often dubbed the summer's blessing! It's a climbing plant thanks to its tendrils (helical stems that help some plants climb), five-lobed leaves and fuzzy stems. Although it originates from the Kalahari Desert, where today it grows wild, there's evidence that the Egyptians cultivated it in 3000 BC, from where it spread along the banks of the Nile to reach the Mediterranean Basin. Unfortunately, the crop disappeared from our area during the decline of the Roman Empire, but this delicious and refreshing fruit couldn't be lost forever and fortunately the Arabs brought it back to Europe years later. Nowadays, there's a huge range of varieties of watermelon. At Finca Quixote, we decided to grow mini striped watermelon, specifically the Gatinho variety. To be successful with this plant, it's essential to implement crop rotation, control weed competition when the plants are younger, and fertilise with biodynamic preparations. We sow at a higher planting density than usual to produce a much smaller fruit that concentrates all its flavour in a more convenient and manageable format, compared to the enormous watermelons that we're used to. The watermelon requires about 6.000 m³/h of water to grow properly. If we don't get enough rainfall, we use a drip irrigation system to guarantee your harvest. We use water responsibly, implementing a probe system that tells us when to water and how much water to add to each plot. Following our goal to “close the circle”, we carry out periodic crop rotations, minimise waste as much as possible, and reuse our waste with the help of both our animals and those of nearby farmers and our compost area. A watermelon field from our farm produces an average of 42kg each season. You do not have to commit to the consumption of the whole harvest. Each season you may decide what quantity to reserve and pay the maintenance in accordance with the amount you reserve. This way you will only pay for what you consume and we can plan and sell the remaining harvest amount to others.
During harvest season you can progressively receive the quantity of harvest that you reserve at the moment of adoption. You will receive a minimum of 2 boxes, which can be increased up to 5 boxes according to your needs. Shipping format: __7kg box of Demeter organic watermelon__ * Gatinho: Green rind with stripes. Deep red flesh with a very high water content and an intense sweetness - perfect for the hot summer months! * Biodynamic cultivation certified by the Demeter seal since 2016 * Picked the day before shipment at their optimal point of ripeness and shipped in a cardboard box without plastics * 1 piece weighs between 2 and 3kg (in the box you'll receive between 2 and 4 watermelons) * If you keep them in a fresh and airy place, they can last 2-3 weeks in good condition * If you don't finish it once it has been cut open, cover to prevent it from drying out and store in the fridge You can eat watermelon at any time. When we grow fruits and vegetables, we try to organise the sowing dates to stagger the harvest and offer you the freshest product. We begin sowing in spring to offer you watermelons from June to September, depending on the weather conditions each year.
