Adopt an onion field from "Finca Quixote" in Llanos del Caudillo (Spanje) and receive your harvest in the form of Demeter organic white and red onions at home. Carlos will take care of your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you receive your harvest and you enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.
Adopt an onion field (6m²) that we cultivate under the Organic Farming and Demter regulations of the European Union since 2016. Finca Quixote was founded in 2001 on the basis of two fundamental pillars: respect for the land and the search for innovation in growing food. Accordingly, we obtained our first organic certificate in 2003 and today we cultivate our land under Demeter regulations. *Allium cepa* is the scientific name for what we all know as the onion, a vegetable originally from Central Asia. However, it was the Greeks and Romans who brought it to Europe, including Spain, where it is still grown today. It's said to have been one of the first vegetables ever cultivated by humans and a staple food for soldiers or pyramid builders. We grow white onions and red onions here at Finca Quixote, and specifically two varieties of each type, early and late. This means that we have fresh onions for more months throughout the year. There are several options when it comes to sowing onions. Some people choose to sow the seed directly in the field, while others plant the seedlings once they have grown in nurseries. We opted for the second option, buying the young onion seedlings from a certified nursery and then planting them on our land, which reduces the risks associated with direct sowing. The onion requires about 6000 m³/h of water to grow properly. If we don't get enough rainfall, we use a drip irrigation system to guarantee your harvest. We use water responsibly, implementing a probe system that tells us when to irrigate and how much water to add to each plot. Following our goal to “close the circle”, we carry out periodic crop rotations, minimise waste as much as possible, and revalue our waste with the help of both our animals and those of nearby farmers and our compost area. A onion field from our farm produces an average of 25kg each season. You do not have to commit to the consumption of the whole harvest. Each season you may decide what quantity to reserve and pay the maintenance in accordance with the amount you reserve. This way you will only pay for what you consume and we can plan and sell the remaining harvest amount to others.
During harvest season you can progressively receive the quantity of harvest that you reserve at the moment of adoption. You will receive a minimum of 2 boxes, which can be increased up to 5 boxes according to your needs. Shipping format: __2.5kg Demeter white onion + 2.5kg Demeter red onion__ * __Early white onion__ (June-September): also known as the babosa onion, sweet flavour and very juicy * __Late white onion__ (September-December): also known as the reca onion, with a mild and sweet flavour, lower water content than the babosa, and a slightly more pronounced spiciness * __Early red onion__ (June-September): with a reddish to purplish colour, sweet taste, very slight spiciness and a lot of moisture * __Late red onion__ (September-December): very similar to the early red onion, but can survive colder weather better * Ideal both for cooking and for eating raw * Biodynamic farming certified by the Demeter seal since 2016 * One kilo contains between 4 and 5 onions (the box contains between 20 and 30 onions depending on the size) * If you keep them in a fresh and airy place, they can last 4 weeks in good condition

When we grow vegetables, we try to organise the sowing dates to stagger the harvest and offer you the freshest product. We begin sowing onions at the beginning of the year to offer you onions from June to December, although this depends on the weather conditions of each year.
