Adopt a garlic field from "Finca Quixote" in Llanos del Caudillo (Spanje) and receive your harvest in the form of Demeter organic purple garlic at home. Carlos will take care of your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you receive your harvest and you enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.

Wat adopteer je?

Adopt a garlic field (2,5m²) that we cultivate under the Organic Farming and Demter regulations of the European Union since 2016. Finca Quixote was founded in 2001 on the basis of two fundamental pillars: respect for the land and the search for innovation in growing food. Accordingly, we obtained our first organic certificate in 2003 and today we cultivate our land under Demeter regulations. We grow purple garlic, which is native to Castile-La Mancha and belongs to the Allium Sativum species, one of the oldest vegetables used by man. Although the exact origin of garlic is unknown, it is believed that it spread from Asia Minor to Africa, and from there it reached the Mediterranean area. Garlic is actually a biennial herbaceous plant, although when cultivated from bulbs (not from seeds), it grows as an annual plant. It is sown between the end of November and January. In order for it to grow correctly, garlic requires sprinkler irrigation if the rainfall does not meet its water requirements, which are around 3,500 m³/ha. Garlic is harvested once the bulb fully develops, which is usually between June and July. Once the garlic is harvested, it is left in the field for a few days so that it loses moisture and can be preserved properly. Following our goal to “close the circle”, we carry out periodic crop rotations, minimise waste as much as possible, and revalue our waste with the help of both our animals and those of nearby farmers and our compost area. Each garlic field of 2,5 m² bears an average of 2kg of Demeter organic purple garlic per season.

Wat krijg je?

Each season we will send you a box with: __2kg of Demeter purple garlic heads __ * White on the outside and purple on the inside, it has a single row of very uniform, crescent-shaped cloves, it has a hotter taste and a more intense smell than other varieties * When eaten raw the skin is normally removed; when used for cooking, the skin can be left on or you can even put the whole head in some stews * Biodynamic cultivation certified by the Demeter seal since 2016 * The box includes a few extra garlic heads, in case any of them arrives damaged * 1kg contains between 25 and 30 pieces (you will receive approx. 55 garlic heads in the box, depending on the size) * Storing them in a cool and airy place can make them last up to 20 weeks in good conditions (if you want them to last longer, keep them in the fridge) Purple garlic stands out from other varieties for its spicier taste and more intense smell. It is said that it brings three times more flavour to dishes than other varieties. This is due to its high concentration of allicin, which makes it succulent and pleasing to the palate. To preserve garlic, store in a cool, dry and ideally dark place, at room temperature. Six months after harvesting, garlic may begin to sprout, which is why we recommend that after 5 months you store it in a dark place below 4˚C so that you can enjoy your garlic for 8 months. You can also freeze it if this is easier for you and you want to extend its shelf life by up to one year.

Wanneer ontvang je het?

When we grow vegetables, we try to organise the sowing dates to stagger the harvest and offer you the freshest product. We begin sowing garlic between November and January to pick in June and July, although this depends on the weather conditions of each year. You will receive your harvest between July and September, when the garlic has been harvested and properly dried.
