Adopt a sheep or a goat from "Edelkäserei Kalteiche" in Wilgersdorf (Duitsland) and receive your harvest in the form of Demeter organic sheep and goat semi-hard cheese at home. Matthias will take care of your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. As the production coming from one sheep or goat is big, the adoption is shared among various people. If you wish to have a bigger share, you may adopt more than once. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you received your harvest and you enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.

Wat adopteer je?

Adopt a sheep or a goat that we cultivate following the Organic Farming and Demeter regulations of the European Union since 2010. The __East Frisian sheep__ is an ancient breed of a domestic animal that is endangered (it is on the list of endangered domestic animal breeds). The East Frisian sheep can be easily identified by its bald tail. It is a large sheep that is very calm by nature and is colored white, piebald or dark brown. Compared to other breeds, it is rather slender and very finely built. Its home is East Frisia, but it was soon bred all over Germany. Our sheep are outside during the summer months and when the weather is good. They are allowed to eat grass, clover and herbs in our meadows – most of which are located in the Weißtal nature reserve. In winter, they get hay and dry grass silage from our own land. We also feed each sheep around 400g of oats daily, as well as some bought-in organic feed made from wheat, rapeseed meal and maize, to ensure a stable yield of milk and a good bodily condition for the sheep. The animals in our herd have an average age of 4 years. However, on our farm they can live up to 12 years; they then leave our herd for reasons of age or illness. These animals are generally no longer of interest to the meat industry. The herd is established by natural mating. To do this, we leave the animals together with a buck, so that he inseminates the female animals naturally. The young lambs are allowed to stay with their mother and suckle milk for 8 to 10 weeks, and then they are weaned and fed with hay or grass in the pasture. Some lambs leave the farm and are slaughtered; others we keep on our farm, and they are then added to our herd as new milk sheep. We keep 120 sheep on approximately 38 hectares of pasture and grassland. Then there are also the __Anglo-Nubian goats__ from our friend Bernd Uwe, whose Demeter milk we also process in our artisanal cheese dairy. We used to keep both the sheep and goats in our stable until we handed the latter over to Bernd Uwe for space and organisational reasons. Bernd also works according to Demeter standards and continues to bring the milk to us. Somehow, though, the goats still belong to us a bit. :-) The Anglo-Nubian goat is an English breed, but it originates from Africa. It stands out for its good quality of milk with extremely high-level ingredients. The goats are left together with the buck in summer, and they then lamb in November. The majority of the lambs only stay on the farm for 2 to 3 weeks. They then go to a breeder and, ultimately, to the meat market. Some people from our surrounding area also have their lamb raised by us for their own consumption. We keep some of the lambs to add to our own flock, and these are raised by their mothers. The animals are kept on the pasture and fed in winter with our own hay, haylage and some organic concentrated feed (the farm has around 40 ha). Bernd Uwe keeps his 150 goats just like we do our sheep (according to Demeter guidelines), it is only that the goats like the rainy days even less than our sheep do and, therefore, sometimes never leave the stable at all after taking a quick peek out the door. ;-) The productive life of a sheep or a goat is around 10 years. For as long as you want to keep it and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew your adoption year after year. If your sheep or goat dies, we will replace it with no additional cost and assuring the delivery of your production from other animals. Each sheep or goat produces an average of 1-2,5 liters of milk each day. With this amount we can produce around 35kg of Demeter organic sheep and goat semi-hard cheese every season. Each sheep or goat is adopted by 35 CrowdFarmers who receive a box with 1kg of Demeter organic sheep and goat semi-hard cheese.

Wat krijg je?

Each season we will send you a box with: 1 x __Demeter organic semi-hard goat cheese__ (350g, shrink-wrapped) 1 x __"Schazi" Demeter organic semi-hard cheese from sheep & goat milk__ (350g, shrink-wrapped) 1 x __smoked Demeter organic sheep cheese rounds__ (150g, shrink-wrapped) 1 x __Demeter organic camembert made from sheep milk__ (150g, shrink-wrapped) The __semi-hard goat cheese__ is a mild, semi-hard cheese made from goat milk that is matured for approx. 3 months. The __Schazi semi-hard cheese__ is very similar to the goat cheese, but creamier, thanks to the pure sheep milk. It is allowed to mature with us for about 3 months. Both cheeses keep for approx. 8 weeks when stored in the refrigerator. Our__ smoked cheese rounds__ are something very special: they are small, round semi-hard cheeses that ripen in the smoke and, as a result, reveal a very special, smoky aroma and a pleasant, semi-firm texture. Keep for 8 weeks when stored in the refrigerator. Our favourite item, the __camembert__ made from sheep milk, impresses with its creamy texture and gentle flavour. If you prefer a stronger camembert flavour, let it mature for even longer at home. Keeps for 21 days when stored in the refrigerator. We recommend enjoying all cheeses at room temperature so that their taste can fully develop. All cheeses contain: sheep and/or goat milk, salt, animal rennet. Wanneer ontvang je het?

Our sheep and goats provide milk almost all year round, with the exception of the dry period, which begins in September/October and lasts roughly until November, when lambing begins. The adoption season always lasts for half a year, and we ship the cheese once in autumn and once in spring.
