Adopt an orange tree from the "Verger de Alicia" farm in Valencia (Spanje) and receive your oranges and organic Canary Island bananas from Spain at home. Gonzalo will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.

Wat adopteer je?

You adopt an orange tree from our farm in Valencia (Spanje) that we cultivate following the Organic Farming regulations of the European Union. We are already in the process of converting and expect to be officially certified by 2024. When placing the adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your orange tree. The orange tree plays a major role on our farm, and we'd like you to tell you a bit more about it. Its scientific name is *Citrus sinensis*, which as you'll know is a citrus fruit, and it originated in Asia over two thousand years ago. These trees have undergone numerous modifications due to both natural selection and artificial hybridisations, which has given rise to a huge range of varieties. We grow three varieties on our farm, which means that we can stagger the harvest, reduce peak workloads and offer you a more exciting box with different oranges, each one unique in flavour, acidity, shape, sweetness, etc. More specifically, we grow the Navelina and Lane Late varieties (both of the Lane variety), and the Salustiana, which belongs to the White Orange variety. Each tree is unique, but the varieties share some common characteristics. Navelinas are medium-sized, more or less rounded and with very dark coloured leaves; Lane Lates are more vigorous than Navelinas, with very dense foliage; and Salustianas are the largest of all, with very vigorous and upright branches, full of lighter green leaves. You can see that the written descriptions are quite different, but it's not so easy to see that on the trees. We'd love you to visit the farm and see if you're able to tell them apart! In May 2021, we took up a new challenge: to convert El Verger de Alicia to organic farming. Thanks to its climate and relief, the farm offers optimal conditions for the development of this organic project. The farm is 100% organic and herbicide-free. We control weeds mechanically, we only cut the grass in the summer months (so that it doesn't compete with the fruit trees), and we control pests with the help of insects. In your box you also receive delicious bananas grown by Luz Elena, the farmer at Finca la Mocanera. Although we would love to grow bananas, it is fortunate that we are not able to do so. To be able to grow bananas in Valencia would mean that global warming would have reached terrifying levels. Luz's bananas are grown on the island of La Palma, following EU standards of organic agriculture since 2018. They are grown in an environment that does not allow for mechanised farming, with extreme climatic conditions that mean that the banana needs 6 instead of 3 months on the plant, resulting in a more delicate, somewhat uglier and smaller, but undoubtedly much tastier banana. Your adoption is 22 years old and its maximum lifespan is 30 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops producing for any reason, we will replace it with another, and guarantee you the delivery from the production of other units. By adopting an orange tree you can receive up to 60kg of oranges and organic Canary Island bananas from Spain each season. You do not have to commit to ordering the entire harvest though. Each season you can decide how much you want to reserve, and you pay the maintenance cost according to that amount. This way you only pay for what you plan to consume, and we can offer any surplus harvest to others.

Wat krijg je?

During the season, you will be able to receive the harvest that you are reserving now: a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 10 boxes. Once you have paid for the adoption, you will be able to plan your shipments from your user account. Shipping format: __Mixed box of 5kg oranges and 1kg organic Canary Island bananas from Spain__ * Navelinas (December - January): slightly protruding navel; oval shape; very juicy; easy to peel; balanced flavour between bitter and sweet * Salustianas (January): medium sized; flattened round shape; few pips. Perfect for a juice with a great balance between sweet and bitter * Lane Lates (January - March): round shape; thin skin; medium sized; deep orange colour * Canary Island bananas: a sweeter and more aromatic flavour than other bananas, with dark speckles on the skin * Box contains products cultivated by two farmers of CrowdFarming * Oranges: cultivated on the Verger de Alicia, farming in transition to organic farming since 2021 * Bananas: cultivated on finca Mocanera, organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 2018 * Harvested on request, shipped without wax or preservative treatments in a cardboard box without plastics * The skin of the Canary Island banana is very sensitive and blackens easily when knocked or in low temperatures; however, the black specks on the skin aren't a sign of rot * One kilo of oranges contains between 4 and 6 fruits * One kilo of bananas contains between 5 and 8 fruits * If the orange are kept in a cool, well-ventilated place, they will keep in good condition for up to 15 days * The banana is a climacteric fruit, i.e. it is harvested when it has reached physiological ripeness but continues to develop after harvesting; it has not been subjected to artificial post-ripening * Depending on how ripe you receive the bananas, they will keep for about 7 days in good condition. If you want them to last longer, you can store them in the fridge

Wanneer ontvang je het?

We harvest our oranges from December to March. The exact dates may vary depending on the weather in each season.
