You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.
You adopt 80m² of a lentil field from our farm in Deutsch Jahrndorf (Oostenrijk). The cultivation here is certified as organic by the European Union as of 2008. We are inviting you to adopt a plot of land with us for cultivating lentils. The lentil is an annual plant that belongs to the legume family. Its scientific name is "*lens culinaris*". It is a particularly hardy herbaceous plant. It originated in Turkey, where it is still cultivated on a much larger scale than in northern and central Europe. In Austria, it is more of a niche crop and is rarely found in the fields, because the consumption of legumes has decreased throughout Europe in recent decades, while meat consumption has tended to increase. Slowly but surely, legumes are making their way back onto our menu! We now grow mountain, brown and beluga lentils. We have the brown lentils peeled and get red lentils from them. The peeled mountain lentils become yellow lentils. We grow our lentils on a large scale at the end of March to the beginning of April. After germination, they are mechanically harrowed ("combed"), so that germinating weeds are buried. The weeds subsequently need to be controlled manually. Over the summer months, the lentils dry in the field and are harvested gently with a thresher in July. Afterwards, they need to be cleaned to remove stones and other plants. In order to offer you the greatest possible variety, you will also receive a pack of chickpeas of the Twist variety in your harvest box. The cultivation is very similar, as they also belong to the legumes, and of course also takes place on our farm. Each lentil field produces an average of 5kg of colourful organic lentil and chickpea mix per season.
Each season we will send you: __5kg box of colourful organic lentil and chickpea mix__ * 1kg of brown lentils, 1kg of mountain lentils, 1kg of beluga lentils, 500g of red lentils, 500g of yellow lentils and 1kg of chickpeas (each in a resealable bag) * We like to use the brown lentils for vegetables and soups; mountain and beluga lentils taste very good in salads and as spread; I like to use chickpeas in various types of hummus and stews, while the red and yellow lentils as peeled lentils are very suitable for curries, stews and soups * Due to the extensive range we offer, there are no limits to your creativity and you can conjure up a wide variety of dishes * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 2008 * We recommend that you store the lentils and chickpeas in a dry, cool and dark place and consume them within 18 months of harvesting __Further information and interesting facts:__ Most of these lentil varieties are distinct types that we grow separately (brown, mountain and beluga lentils). We have the brown lentils peeled and get red lentils from them. The peeled mountain lentils become yellow lentils. That means even more variety in your package! This peeling is also the reason why you don't need to soak the yellow and red lentils or cook them for a long time. Just 10-15 minutes is enough, depending on the desired texture. I recommend cooking the other lentils for between 30 minutes (al dente, e.g. for salads) and 45 minutes (for soups, purees, porridge, stews, etc). The chickpeas should definitely be soaked overnight - change the water twice, and then cook for 1 hour (for salads) to 1.5 hours (for soups etc.).

We sow the legumes at the end of March or beginning of April, depending on the weather, and harvest them in July (lentils) and August (chickpeas). Because we thresh quite deeply, they need to be cleaned afterwards to remove stones and other impurities as much as possible. We can then send you the fresh harvest from the beginning of November and in the following months.
