Adopt a lime tree from the "Azienda Agricola San Mauro" farm in Corigliano Calabro (Italië) and receive your organic limes at home. Anita will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.
You adopt a lime tree from our farm in Corigliano Calabro (Italië). The cultivation here is certified as organic by the European Union as of 1992. When placing the adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your lime tree. Lime is a citrus fruit native to Asia, primarily Malaysia and India, and it belongs to the Rutaceae family. It is thought to be a cross between lemon and cedar. It arrived in Europe at the end of the 19th century, when India was a British colony. The British sailors used it on their ships to help prevent scurvy, replacing the lemon that they would otherwise buy in Mediterranean countries. Unlike other citrus fruits, which prefer a subtropical climate, limes require a tropical climate. This is why it is mainly grown in America (where the Portuguese introduced it in the 16th century) and in South-East Asia. In the Mediterranean region, production is very important in Egypt, while it is very limited in other countries. In Italy, it is grown only in some southern regions, as it does not tolerate low temperatures. There are several varieties of lime, but the most cultivated is the only non-hybrid: *Citrus aurantiifolia*. The plant reaches a maximum height of 5 metres, has branches with many thorns and a more irregular shape than other citrus fruits. It can produce fruit up to 3 times a year. Your adoption is 10 years old and its maximum lifespan is 30 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops producing for any reason, we will replace it with another, and guarantee you the delivery from the production of other units. Your lime tree produces an average of 19kg of organic limes each season. You do not have to commit to ordering the entire harvest though. Each season you can decide how much you want to reserve, and you pay the maintenance cost according to that amount. This way you only pay for what you plan to consume, and we can offer any surplus harvest to others.
During the season, you will be able to receive the harvest that you are reserving now: a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 10 boxes. Once you have paid for the adoption, you will be able to plan your shipments from your user account. Shipping format: __1.9 kg box of organic limes__ * *Citrus aurantiifolia* (lime) : small oval-shaped fruit, very thin, green skin when picked, very juicy, with a high vitamin C content, slightly more acidic taste than lemon and with a bitter note * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 1992 * Picked the day before shipment at their optimal point of ripeness and shipped in a cardboard box without plastics * Our farm is not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in appearance and size * One kilo contains between 14 and 25 fruits (the box contains between 25 and 45 fruits depending on the size) * If you keep them in a fresh and airy place, they can last up to 3 weeks in good condition * We do not recommend putting them in the fridge as this could dry out the fruits internally Perhaps the most famous use of lime is in cocktails, but it can also be used to flavour fish or meat dishes, in a fruit salad, to make juices by adding other fruits, in desserts, to squeeze over a mango or to make a delicious guacamole. To make it easier to extract the juice, before cutting it, you can roll the fruit on a hard surface, applying light pressure with your hands.
