Adopt 3m² of a melon plot from "Azienda agricola biologica Pasquini Pierpaolo e Ridulfo Anna" in Campiglia Marittima (Italië) and receive your organic melons at home. Alessandro will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.

Wat adopteer je?

You adopt 3m² of a melon plot from our farm in Campiglia Marittima (Italië). The cultivation here is certified as organic by the European Union as of 2002. We cultivate cantaloupe melons that belong to the Cucurbitacea family. It is a herbaceous annual plant consisting of a creeping main stem, which branches out and can become a climber. The roots are particularly well developed above ground, though they also run very deep. To grow and produce the best fruit, the plant needs a warm climate with low humidity and deep, extremely well-drained soil. The variety is Cantalupo and is so called because it was originally brought by Asian Catholic missionaries to the papal castle of Cantalupo, a locality in Bassa Sabina about fifty kilometres from Rome (province of Rieti). The melon is one of various crops on our farm and produces between 3 and 5 fruits per plant. Depending on the time of year, we rotate our plots to favour the supply of nutrients, avoid erosion, increase the yield of our land, and reuse crop residues. On our farm in Suvereto, on the shores of the Tyrrhenian Sea in Tuscany, we cultivate our crops following organic farming criteria. We do so in a way that encourages biodiversity, creating an important balance with the environment, which we know and respect. Over the years we have had great success with organic pest management practices which, although very costly, have brought us great results. Your melon plot produces an average of 22kg of organic melons each season. You do not have to commit to ordering the entire harvest though. Each season you can decide how much you want to reserve, and you pay the maintenance cost according to that amount. This way you only pay for what you plan to consume, and we can offer any surplus harvest to others.

Wat krijg je?

You can reserve between 1 and 4 boxes for the season, and then plan the deliveries for any of the delivery dates available in the shipment calendar. Shipping format: __5,5kg box of organic melons__ * Cantaloupe Melon Retato (June-August): spherical in shape and externally green with yellowish mottling, inside it has orange, smooth and creamy flesh with a sweet and tasty flavour, its has a very characteristic and pleasant aroma * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 2002 * Harvested on request, shipped without wax or preservative treatments in a cardboard box without plastics * One kilo contains between 1 and 2 fruits * If you keep them in a fresh and airy place, they can last up to 5-6 days in good condition (if you want them to last longer, you can keep them in the fridge) * It is a climacteric fruit which is harvested when it reaches physiological maturity; after being picked from the tree it then continues to ripen until it has reached its optimum point for consumption In order to know when the melon is ripe, several things are important: first of all, you should feel that it is firm and compact all over, but yields slightly to finger pressure. It should also feel heavy, which indicates the right concentration of sugars; finally, the smell should be slightly strong, but not too strong, as this would indicate over-ripening.

Wanneer ontvang je het?

Sowing is done in spring, when the temperature has reached 14-15°C. Harvesting starts approximately 120-160 days after sowing, and continues in stages for 15-30 days. The melons must be harvested at a specific stage of development because a delay compromises sweetness while an early harvest compromises quality (at least 10% sugar content is required). Visible signs of ripening are the detachment of the peduncle from the fruit, the appearance of concentric cracks around the peduncle, and the disappearance of hair from the peduncle. We ship our melons once a week during the summer.
