Cosa adotti?

You adopt 8m² of una risaia from our farm in Sollana (Spagna). We will cultivate your rice, harvest it, leave it to dry in the sun, mill it and package it for you. You adopt a rice field in the Albufera Natural Park of Valencia. This emblematic place is a natural freshwater wetland that was declared a “Natural Park” in 1986, and rice has been traditionally grown here for more than a thousand years. Valencia was the first rice-growing area in Europe. The seasons of the year mark the calendar of the rice-growing cycle: in spring the rice fields are sown, the summer is used to nourish the plant; while, in winter, the land is left fallow and flooded to rest and regenerate the soil and aquatic biodiversity. There is a group of rice varieties traditionally cultivated in the Mediterranean that are very similar to each other and belong to the Poaceae family, and we call them “round rice”. The variety that we grow is productive and has a late cycle, which means it can be harvested at the end of the season. It has a dark green colour that contrasts with other varieties, and this creates a mosaic of colours in the landscape of the Albufera. The rice plant is an annual grass with fine, grassy roots. Its stem is very firm, straight and cylindrical. The plant reaches a height of about 70 cm, and it has a low stature that means it does not easily become lodged. The leaves are distributed alternately along the stem, with the last leaf - called “the flag leaf”- growing above the spike. This rice is protected by the Designation of Origin Arroz de Valencia, which certifies that it belongs to a traditional variety and meets all the exceptionally rigorous quality parameters, plus, of course, that it has been grown and produced in this secured environment. Growing varieties within the D.O. means guaranteeing the varietal purity and a percentage of whole grains per package higher than the extra category (the strictest rice standard). Our rices have a minimum of 96% whole grain. We grow our rice with the greatest respect for the environment and with the minimum number of added supplies. Thanks to that, our rice has no trace of chemical residue. The continuous improvement of biodiversity in our plots testifies we are cultivating in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way. Each risaia produces an average of 8kg of Valencia Rice PDO per season.

We will send you the box that you choose when placing the adoption. __Big box:__ 2 x __Round grain rice PDO Valencia__ (2kg bags) 2 x __Whole grain rice PDO Valencia__ (2kg bags) __ small box__ 1 x __Round grain rice PDO Valencia__ (2kg bags) 1 x __Whole grain rice PDO Valencia__ (2kg bags) __Round grain rice PDO Valencia__ : it is a round and pearly grain rice of the Japonica family. It is whitened in three phases: the first with stone abrasion, and the next two with friction between the rice grains themselves. Traditionally produced in Spain, it is deemed as an essential ingedient due to its great capacity to absorb the flavour of the broths in which it is cooked. It has been cultivated in the ecological environment of the Albufera Natural Park for generations. It is of exceptional quality, selected among the varieties descended from the ancient Sénia and Bahia. This rice is usually considered the most suitable for our types of dishes, and it is especially recommended for dishes like paella. Use two portions of water to one of rice. The approximate cooking time is 18 minutes. The best before date is approximately 2 years after harvesting. It must be stored in a cool, dry place. It can even be kept in the fridge or frozen without losing its properties. In our mill we only process rice, so there isn’t any cross-contamination. It doesn’t contain traces of gluten either. __Whole grain rice PDO Valencia__: it is a round and pearly grain rice of the Japonica family. It is only husked, keeping the bran and germ, where most of the rice nutrients are found. It is traditionally produced in Spain. It has been cultivated in the ecological environment of the Albufera Natural Park for generations. The regularity of the size of its grains offers a pleasant sensation to the palate. It is mostly used to prepare side dishes and salads, as well as vegetable paella. We recommend soaking it for hours before and boiling it with excess of water. The approximate cooking time is 30 minutes. Brown rice requires slower cooking. Once cooked, it will always be "al dente". The best before date is approximately 2 years after harvesting. It must be stored in a cool and dry place. It is recommended to preserve it below 18ºC. It can even be kept in the fridge or frozen without losing its properties. In our mill we only process rice, so there isn’t any cross-contamination. It doesn’t contain traces of gluten either. Our packages are plastic-free and they are sewn by hand, one by one by our team, with a lot of effort and affection. Nutrition Facts labels can be downloaded in 'Additional Analyses'.

Quando lo ricevi?

We will start to reap the rice in September. After that, we will dry it until it is at its optimum point to be able to peel. It will be stored in the barn until December, when we will start milling it in our own mill. The best grains will be selected, and then we will pack the rice in our hand-sewn cloth bags so you can enjoy it from January onwards.
