You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.
You adopt a lyciet from our farm in Terranjou (Francia). The cultivation here is certified as organic by the European Union as of 2021. When placing the adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your lyciet. The Jardin de Brizé is located on the vineyards of the Domaine de Brizé in Maine et Loire. In parallel with the vineyard, it was in 2005 that we started to look at other types of crops with a focus on the foods that were still little known. Over the years, and after having accumulated a lot of information on the subject, we have chosen to cultivate the common lyciet* (Lycium barbarum)*, better known under the commercial name of Goji Berry. Lyciet is a shrub of the Solanaceae family, like the tomato and the potato. More than 70 species of lycium have been identified worldwide, yet only two are marketed for their berries: *Lycium barbarum* and *Lycium chinense*. Although mainly known for its Asian origins and its use in medicine, it was in the 2000s that a French horticulturalist, Jean-Pierre Fauré, embarked on the improvement of primary Goji varieties. He created about twenty varieties more resistant to extreme temperatures, diseases, and above all more adapted to the European taste (sweeter, less bitterness and astringency). We chose one of these varieties for its natural resistance to powdery mildew and therefore its facilitated cultivation in organic farming. Thus, we were ready to produce a French Goji berry without residues of fungicides and insecticides with a good taste and all the nutritional richness it has to offer. In 2020, we planted about 7,000 feet on 2.5 ha of old vineyard plots on the soil composed of silt and shale. This type of soil promotes the natural drainage of water, allowing the development of the root system of plants. The shrubby shape and long branches of the gojis led us to choose a 3m inter-row and try different heights of trellising. At the end of winter, we cut into "candlesticks" (3 or 4 beautiful shoots spread apart in fan shape). We are staggering this period to space the harvest dates. Unlike old shoots, young shoots tend to yield less fruit but larger ones that will be marketed and eaten fresh. The first isolated flower buds appear from the end of June. But the real flowering takes place in the first half of July for a harvest of the first fruits at the end of July/beginning of August. We are currently working in collaboration with INRAE, a research institute that studies the active ingredients of our Goji berries (sugar and polysaccharides). Your adoption is 2 years old and its maximum lifespan is 10 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops producing for any reason, we will replace it with another, and guarantee you the delivery from the production of other units. Your adoption produces an average of 2.5kg of fresh organic Goji berries each season. With this amount we can produce around 0.5kg of dried organic Goji berries.
Each season we will send you a box with: 2 x __Dried organic Goji berries__ (250g each, paper bag) We dry our Goji berries with a low temperature dehydrator (not exceeding 50°C), so that the berries remain soft and maintain almost all of their nutrients. However, depending on the weather and harvest week, berries may have different sensory qualities and taste. These French Goji berries are less bitter than their Asian cousins. After drying, they retain a real chewiness and recall the slightly caramelised quality of the date or dried prune. We advise you to chew them well in order to rehydrate them in the mouth and to be able to get at the seeds where the amino acids are stored. The Goji berry, a very intense orange in colour, can be eaten for breakfast or as a treat (10 to 20 g per serving). They are versatile in cooking because of their sweet side (smoothie bowls, cereals, yogurt, salads) and can also be left infused. As they do not contain any residue from their production in organic farming, they can be consumed directly. You can keep your Goji berries for a year if you keep them in a cool, dry place away from light.

The harvest takes place from the end of July to the end of October. We harvest the Goji berries by hand; each vine is harvested once a week. In addition to the orange-red colour and firmness, ripeness is reached when the fruit changes from matte to shiny velvet and is easily detached from its pedicel. You will receive your dried Goji berries in December.
