Adopt an almond tree from the farm "Doña Marina" in Guadahortuna (Spagna) and receive your shelled almonds at home. Pedro will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.
You adopt an almond tree from our farm in Guadahortuna (Spagna) that we cultivate following the Organic Farming regulations of the European Union. We are already in the process of converting and expect to be officially certified by 2023. When placing the adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your almond tree. This is a very special project, because in addition to adopting an almond tree and receiving its harvest, you participate in the reforestation of part of our farm with native species! __An almond tree__ Our farm (Cortijo) has belonged to our family for more than 100 years, and from the beginning we have cultivated almond trees (*Prunus dulcis*). We farm different varieties, the most present ones being Vairo and Lauranne, in conversion to organic agriculture. What’s more, our trees are also grazed by sheep in a perfect combination! The almond tree, *Prunus dulcis*, originated in the Middle East. Almonds were first brought to Spain by the Romans. On the farm we have different varieties of almond trees, ranging in age from 3 to 60 years. The tastiest of these varieties are __Vairo__ and __Lauranne__. __Vairo__ is a Spanish variety that originated in Catalonia and blooms very vigorously. The __Lauranne__ variety originated in France and is highly resistant to pests. Both varieties are well adapted to spring frosts, which occur frequently in our very mountainous area. The combination of all these parameters gives our almonds a characteristic, rich, highly concentrated flavour. Our almond trees are entirely rain-fed, and no irrigation water is used. We have started the process of conversion towards organic certification and expect it to be completed by 2023. __A native tree__ Trees are vital for regenerating and protecting our land and soils. In the last years, we have had a mission: to plant more trees. It has been an amazing journey and we want our CrowdFarmers to be part of the project. In this project, in addition to receiving your almond harvest, we commit ourselves to plant a native tree. We will take care of the trees with love and attention. And, until they can survive on their own, we will water them and protect them from weather and wild animals. The trees will be planted on the borders of our plots, enclosing the existing crops. This ancient method, called hedgerow, protects the land and has numerous benefits: * Reduce soil erosion * Increase water filtration * Windbreaker, protecting other crops and reducing water loss * Restore biodiversity, increasing pollinators and natural pest control * Regulate extreme temperatures * Provide shelter and shadow to animals * Fix atmospheric carbon For every adopted almond tree, we will plant a tree (at least one year old) from one of the five different species we have selected. All of them are adapted and found naturally in the area. * Elm (*Ulmus minor*): almost extinct in the 60s because of certain pests * Hackberry (*Celtis australis*): very strong and drought resistant * Holm Oak (*Quercus ilex*): the most representative Mediterranean tree * Pine tree (*Pinus spp*): fantastic animal shelter in winter * Wild olive (*Olea Europaea* var. *sylvestris*): the wild variety of the famous olive tree Furthermore, to every planted tree, we will plant Mediterranean shrubs and aromatics (Rosemary, lavender and broom) and put seeds from other nut trees. These shrubs will protect the soil while the trees establish themselves and grow. Your adoption is 6 years old and its maximum lifespan is 80 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops producing for any reason, we will replace it with another, and guarantee you the delivery from the production of other units. Your almond tree produces an average of 1.5kg of shelled almonds each season.
Each season we will send you a box with: Each season we will send you a box with: 1 x __Shelled almonds__ (1,5kg. cotton bag) * Vairo: small almond with sweet flavour; It is the best variety for roasted almonds * Lauranne: uniform grain with an elongated shape, light amber colour and pleasantly sweet flavour * You will receive a mix of these varieties * You can eat them right after opening the bag raw as a snack, but you can also use them for roasting or frying, add them to your yoghurt, or make tasty desserts like almond and cinnamon buns - they'll be delicious! * They will arrive packed in a cotton bag that you can reuse at home or in the garden Once you peel the almonds, in order to maintain their full flavour and crunchy texture, we recommend you follow three steps: 1. Keep them below 25ºC: In the hottest months, it may be necessary to put them in the fridge. 2. Keep them away from sunlight. If they are left for several weeks (4 or more) in sunlight they will start to oxidise and their flavour will start to change. 3. For shelled almonds, choose jars or bags that can be closed with a lid, elastic band or clip. This way they will not absorb moisture and will maintain their texture. You will receive your harvest personalised with the name you chose at the time of placing the adoption. Of course, you are part of the project, therefore, you are invited to come to our farm and collaborate on the plantation day. We will send you an email with the exact date as soon as we can confirm it! When the planting is ready, we will register it on MapMyTree, an initiative from the Environmental European Agency. This initiative tracks the commitment of the EU to plant 3 million trees. The nutrition facts label can be downloaded in 'Additional Analyses'.
Quando lo ricevi?
The almonds are ready to be harvested at the end of the summer. Once harvested, they need to be dried and shelled, so we estimate that by mid-November we will be able to send you your harvest. The best time to plant the native trees is at the end of winter, when the cold starts to retreat, the soil is moist from the rains and spring is approaching. The planting, to which all CrowdFarmers who have adopted an almond tree with a native tree are invited, will probably take place during February.
