Adopt an avocado tree from the farm "Domaines De La Taste" in Tallone (Francia) and receive your harvest in the form of avocados at home. Loïc will take care of your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.
When placing the adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your avocado tree. Avocado is a tropical fruit native to Central America belonging to the Lauraceae (Laurel) family. Its planting requires a graft in order to obtain better production and quality fruit. Indeed, the rootstock transmits its strength and its ability to adapt to the graft. Our avocados are of the Hass variety, or *Persea americana* var. Hass, which was selected in California in the early twentieth century by Rudolph Hass, hence its name. It is a self-fertile variety that is now the most cultivated in the world. Its trees can reach up to 7 metres high. Its foliage is persistent and bright green, while its pearly white flowers appear in panicles in spring. Interestingly, avocados are dichogamous plants, meaning that the flowers open twice: once male and then once female or once female and then once male. To ensure fertilisation, it is therefore necessary to plant different varieties of avocados within the plots in order to always have male and female flowers simultaneously that our beloved bees will take care of crossing. The establishment of avocado cultivation in Corsica began more than 30 years ago during an INRAE study conducted by Robert Vogel. However, this research was abandoned and it is now Spanish nurseries that pass on their expertise. The Eastern Plain where our farm is located has a microclimate that lends itself perfectly to avocado cultivation. However, this requires some precautions, in particular surrounding young plants with horticultural fleece in the first years. The grafted avocado tree has a rapid growth that we control by pruning. As its roots grow on the surface, it needs a moist soil on a shallow depth that we maintain by drip irrigation. Thus, its well-controlled cultivation is not water-intensive. In fact, on our farm Les Domaines De La Taste, producing avocados does not require more water than producing citrus fruits. Your adoption is 5 years old and its maximum lifespan is 40 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops producing for any reason, we will replace it with another, and guarantee you the delivery from the production of other units. Your avocado tree produces an average of 5kg of avocados each season. You do not have to commit to ordering the entire harvest though. Each season you can decide how much you want to reserve, and you pay the maintenance cost according to that amount. This way you only pay for what you plan to consume, and we can offer any surplus harvest to others.
During the season, you will be able to receive the harvest that you are reserving now: a minimum of 1 and a maximum of 2 boxes. Once you have paid for the adoption, you will be able to plan your shipments from your user account. Shipping format: __2.5kg box of avocados__ * Hass avocado (December - April): pear-shaped, dark green skin that turns black when ripe, yellowish pulp with a nutty flavour, very creamy texture, small stone * Avocado is a very versatile fruit that is usually eaten raw in savoury preparations such as ceviche, salads, or to prepare guacamole, or sweet dishes such as vegan chocolate mousse * Farming in conversion to Organic Farming since 2020 * Harvested on request, shipped in a cardboard box without plastics * Our farm is not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in appearance and size * One kilo contains between 7 and 9 fruits * It is a climacteric fruit which is harvested when it reaches physiological maturity; after being picked from the tree it then continues to ripen until it has reached its optimum point for consumption * If you keep them in a fresh and airy place, they can last up to 30 days in good condition * Important note: the fruits usually arrive hard; to ripen them, keep them at room temperature until they are ready to eat; if you receive some fruit that is already ripe, you can either eat it right away or keep it in the fridge The speed of ripening of avocados depends on the humidity conditions and the temperature at which they are stored. Once the skin darkens and becomes supple to the touch, it is ready to be enjoyed.
