Adopt a quince tree from the "Venets" farm in Todorovo (Bulgarie) and receive your organic quinces at home. Catherine will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.

You adopt a quince tree along with 10 m² of our mixed orchard from our farm in Todorovo (Bulgarie). The cultivation here is certified as organic by the European Union as of 2021. In our orchards a quince tree never comes alone. Hence, following the principles of permaculture, we grow more than 80 different fruit and vegetable crops in our gardens extensively and in mixed culture (polyculture). In addition to quinces, these include apples, plums, cherries, sour cherries, mulberries, medlars, currants, aronia berries, Japanese quinces and much more. We have planted various old and new varieties of fruits, all of which are particularly flavourful and at the same time resistant to pests and diseases. When placing the adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your quince tree. The quinces are the heart of our gardens. With their enchanting flowers, they delight us as well as a large number of insects in spring. And in autumn, their large, yellow fruits glow like no other fruit and fill our gardens with their irresistible scent. It is not without reason that the ancient Greeks called this magnificent fruit 'golden apple' and valued it as a symbol of love and fertility. Between our fruit trees we have planted shrubs and herbs that fulfil important functions for the health and well-being of the orchards. For example, crab apples. These wild relatives of apples bloom very early in spring and support pollination. Sea buckthorn and comfrey, in turn, can capture nitrogen from the atmosphere and make this important fertiliser available to other plants around them. Fennel, apart from being healthy and aromatic, provides a breeding ground for wasps and butterflies, which in turn keep pests in check and pollinate our orchards. Savory, thyme and many other herbs planted between our fruit trees play similar roles. Our gardens provide a safe space for numerous insects, which allows for a balance between beneficial and harmful creatures. This almost entirely eliminates the need for plant protection measures. In addition, the high level of diversity reduces the risk of uncontrollable disease and pest outbreaks, as is often the case in monocultures. Between the tree rows we sow the ancient grain Einkorn and other annual crops. After the harvest, we use the straw, as well as wool from neighbouring farms, to mulch. This means that we place a “wreath” of straw and wool around each tree in order to reduce evaporation, suppress weeds and fertilise the trees. Your adoption is 6 years old and its maximum lifespan is 50 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops producing for any reason, we will replace it with another, and guarantee you the delivery from the production of other units. Our efforts to promote natural and cultural diversity on our farm is one of the reasons why we have been awarded the second prize in an EU competition for 'Bulgaria’s most modern farm'. Your quince tree and 10m² of the mixed orchard produce an average of 4.5kg of organic quinces each season.

Que recevez-vous?

Each season we will send you a box with: __4.5kg box of organic quinces__ * Hemus and Aseniza: Bulgarian varieties, tender, fleshy and juicy, very aromatic and ideal for making jellies and jams * In Bulgaria, unlike in Germany, for example, it is common to eat quinces raw; they do not taste bitter even when raw and do not cause a furry mouthfeel * Organic cultivation, certified with the EU organic seal since 2021 * Unlike many other fruits, quinces cannot be harvested gradually, but must be picked in a short period of time when they have reached full ripeness; to avoid food waste and to ensure the economic stability of the farmers, they are first shipped fresh from the tree and later stored in a cool place, but never longer than the current season (maximum 12 weeks) * Hand-harvested to order, without waxes and skin preservatives, shipped in a plastic-free cardboard box * Our trees are not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in size and appearance * One kilo contains about 3 fruits * Both varieties can be stored in a cool and dark place, like apples, and do not lose their flavour

Quand le recevez-vous?

We pick our sun-ripened quinces at the exact moment when they start to lose the fuzzy fluff that covers their skins. For us, that is between the end of October and mid-November. At that point they have reached their peak flavour, but are not overripe yet and can be stored very well. This way, we can enjoy them far into the new year.
