Qu'adoptez-vous?

You adopt an apple tree from our farm in Meckenheim (Allemagne). The cultivation here has been certified as organic by the European Union since 2019. When placing the adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your apple tree. The trees grow in our orchard, which we planted in 2016, and which is our favourite place for taking a walk. We grow 13 different apple varieties there: Santana, Elstar, Gala, Cox Orange, Boskoop, Sonnenglanz, Wellant, Jonagold, Topaz, Pinova, Braeburn, Natyra and Fuji. These are all different varieties of the same fruit: the apple. This small selection of our current apple varieties shows how important the apple has been to us as a fruit for a long time. It is not exactly clear how the apple made its way to Germany. What is certain is that it set out on its way to us several thousand years ago along human trade routes from Asia (possibly from Kazakhstan). Today's cultivated apple (*Malus domestica*) is a deciduous tree that can grow to a height of 8 - 15m and forms a protruding crown. In winter, it loses its leaves and reawakens from hibernation in spring with shoots of leaves and beautiful apple blossom. It is, by the way, part of the rose family. We keep an eye on our trees all year round. They must be cut back and cared for, pruned and watered when needed. Your adoption is 6 years old and its maximum lifespan is 25 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops producing for any reason, we will replace it with another, and guarantee you the delivery from the production of other units. Sustainable cultivation is particularly important to us in our work, and in 2019, we were even awarded the Ludwig Company Award in the Sustainability category. Your apple tree produces an average of 22.5kg of Bioland organic "orchard mix" apples each season. You do not have to commit to ordering the entire harvest though. Each season you can decide how much you want to reserve, and you pay the maintenance cost according to that amount. This way you only pay for what you plan to consume, and we can offer any surplus harvest to others.

Que recevez-vous?

During the season, you will be able to receive the harvest that you are reserving now: a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 5 boxes. Once you have paid for the adoption, you will be able to plan your shipments from your user account. Shipping format: __4.5 kg of Bioland organic “orchard mix” apples__ * To experience how diverse the different apple varieties can be, we offer you here a package "Orchard Mix": The different varieties vary from sour (Boskoop) to very sweet (Fuji) and from aromatic (Cox orange) to exotic (Natyra or Sonnenglanz) * For the autumn shipping dates throughout September, October and November, you'll get varieties like Gala, Elstar, Cox Orange, Boskoop, Santana and Wellant * In winter, throughout December, January, February and March, you will receive later varieties like Braeburn, Topaz, Jonagold, Natyra, Fuji, Sonnenglanz and Pinova, as well as Gala in your package * You can download more detailed variety descriptions and a rough harvest calendar under "Additional analyses" * Organic cultivation, certified with the EU organic seal and the Bioland seal since 2019 * Contrary to other fruits, apples cannot be harvested gradually and need to be harvested within a short time span when having reached their full maturity; in order to avoid food waste and to ensure farmer’s economic stability, they are first sent fresh from the tree and for the rest of the season kept in cold storage, never longer than the current season (maximum of 12 weeks storage) * Harvested upon request, without waxes and preservatives on the skin, sent in a plastic-free cardboard box * All apples are suitable as table fruit, which means that they can be enjoyed fresh, but they are also great in cereals; I also recommend the slightly tarter varieties for baking cakes * Our trees are not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in size and appearance * A kilo contains between 4-8 fruits (in a box you will find between 20 and 35 pieces depending on the size) * The best place to store them is in a cool environment, it is best to store your apples in the fridge, this will keep them fresh and crunchy for up to 2-3 weeks, for optimal taste when eaten, they should be served at room temperature * Only put out as much as you can eat in the next two to three days, since our apples ripen quickly at room temperature

Quand le recevez-vous?

We harvest our apples from mid-July to mid-November. We pick each variety several times in order to always harvest optimally ripe fruit. The different varieties have different ripening times and storage characteristics. After harvesting, they are stored in our facilities under optimal conditions. Some varieties need a few more weeks in storage, others can be enjoyed directly from the tree, as the taste is already fully mature. Therefore, we can always offer you a new mix of apples from our apple orchard from mid-September until the new year.
