You adopt an apple tree from our farm in Meckenheim (Allemagne). The cultivation here has been certified as organic by the European Union since 2019. When placing the adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your apple tree. We planted the apple trees in 2016 and the orchard is our favourite place to go for a walk. We grow 13 different apple varieties there, one of them is the Cox Orange. It is not exactly clear how the apple made its way to Germany. What is certain is that it set out on its way to us several thousand years ago along human trade routes from Asia (possibly from Kazakhstan). Today's cultivated apple is a deciduous tree that can grow to a height of 8 - 15m and forms a protruding crown. In winter, it loses its leaves and reawakens from hibernation in spring with shoots of leaves and beautiful apple blossom. It is, by the way, part of the rose family. We keep an eye on our trees all year round. They must be cut back and cared for, pruned and watered when needed. The Cox Orange apple variety, just like the Boskoop, is one of the Renette apple varieties and was discovered in England in the early 19th century. Even though it is actually native to the United Kingdom, it is still considered the "Rhineland classic" today. The soils in the region around Meckenheim and the special microclimate in the foothills of the Eifel offered optimal conditions for the cultivation of Cox Orange (humid and moderately warm summers and wet winters). Today, however, cultivation in our region has declined drastically, as the Cox Orange is experiencing more and more problems in cultivation due to climate change. It gets sunburn, a very rough, cracked skin and the flowers can freeze in spring. So the Cox Orange variety is starting to become a rarity. Your adoption is 6 years old and its maximum lifespan is 25 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops producing for any reason, we will replace it with another, and guarantee you the delivery from the production of other units. Sustainable cultivation is particularly important to us in our work. In 2019, we were even awarded the Ludwig Company Award in the Sustainability category. Your apple tree produces an average of 22.5kg of Bioland organic "Cox Orange" apples each season. You do not have to commit to ordering the entire harvest though. Each season you can decide how much you want to reserve, and you pay the maintenance cost according to that amount. This way you only pay for what you plan to consume, and we can offer any surplus harvest to others.

Que recevez-vous?

During the season, you will be able to receive the harvest that you are reserving now: a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 5 boxes. Once you have paid for the adoption, you will be able to plan your shipments from your user account. Shipping format: __4.5 kg of Bioland organic “Cox Orange” apples__ * Cox Orange: rather small sized apple, tastes sweet and sour, refreshing and aromatic; its pulp is initially firm and juicy and later (or if stored incorrectly) becomes soft and tender * Organic cultivation, certified with the EU organic seal and the Bioland seal since 2019 * Contrary to other fruits, apples cannot be harvested gradually and need to be harvested within a short time span when having reached their full maturity; in order to avoid food waste and to ensure farmer’s economic stability, they are first sent fresh from the tree and for the rest of the season kept in cold storage, never longer than the current season (maximum of 12 weeks storage) * Harvested upon order, without waxes and preservatives on the skin, sent in a plastic-free cardboard box * Due to its excellent taste, the Cox Orange is suitable for direct consumption, but also for apple pies * Our trees are not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in size and appearance * A kilo contains between 5-7 fruits (in a box you will find between 25 and 30 pieces depending on the size) * The best place to store them is in a cool environment, it is best to store your Cox Orange apples in the fridge, this will keep them fresh and crunchy for about 2-3 weeks; for optimal taste when eaten, they should be served at room temperature * Only put out as much as you can eat in the next two to three days, since our apples ripen quickly at room temperature

Quand le recevez-vous?

We harvest our Cox Orange apples from the beginning to the end of September. We pick the fruit from the trees several times in order to always harvest optimally ripe fruits. Cox Orange, as an early autumn or storage variety, has a limited shelf life. Therefore, you will receive your harvest from mid-September to early December.
