You adopt pear tree from our farm in Meckenheim (Allemagne). The cultivation here is certified as organic by the European Union and follow the Bioland guidelines as of 2019. When placing the adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your pear tree. They grow in a pear orchard, which we planted 30 years ago. There is a reason that it is said that one should inherit pears instead of planting them. Like the apple, the pear - *Pyrus communis* - belongs to the rose family (*Rosaceae*). It is virtually the sister of the apple with a different figure ;-) Even if the pear is not grown in such overwhelming quantities as the apple, strawberries or bananas, it is still very popular. Its history goes back a long way. For example, it was already mentioned by the ancient Greeks. Originally from the Middle East, it evolved from various wild species. How it got to Europe is not known exactly. Today's cultivated pear (*Pyrus communis*) can be seen as a very different deciduous tree. Shortly after harvest, the tree loses its leaves for the winter. The growth form and height depends on the variety and the cut. A tree can grow up to 20 meters high. On our plots we keep the trees at a maximum height of 3 meters so that they can be harvested more easily. For this purpose, the trees are regularly pruned in winter and sometimes also in summer. By the way, the flowers of pears, which often appear before the leaves, are much less popular among bees than apple blossoms. It is therefore particularly important for pears to encourage a high population of wild bees, as they do not fly in such a large radius as honey bees do. The Alexander Lucas variety originated in France and was first cultivated there in 1874. It is well suited for cultivation as it is very robust and not very susceptible to diseases. It has a very firm flesh when harvested, which makes it particularly suitable for lovers of firm, crunchy pears. After they've been stored for a while, however, they later becomes delicately tender and sweet. Well ripened, it is our favourite for a great pear jam. Your adoption is 7 years old and its maximum lifespan is 25 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops producing for any reason, we will replace it with another, and guarantee you the delivery from the production of other units. Sustainable cultivation is particularly important to us in our work. In 2019, we were even awarded the Ludwig Company Award in the Sustainability category. Your pear tree produces an average of 40.5kg of Bioland organic pears each season. You do not have to commit to ordering the entire harvest though. Each season you can decide how much you want to reserve, and you pay the maintenance cost according to that amount. This way you only pay for what you plan to consume, and we can offer any surplus harvest to others.

Que recevez-vous?

During the season, you will be able to receive the harvest that you are reserving now: a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 9 boxes. Once you have paid for the adoption, you will be able to plan your shipments from your user account. Shipping format: 4.5 kg of __Bioland organic pears__ “Alexander Lucas” (plastic-free in a cardboard box) * Sweet and juicy in taste, the flesh is firm at the beginning and later tender melting * Organic cultivation, certified with the EU organic seal and the Bioland seal since 2019 * Contrary to other fruits, pears cannot be harvested gradually and need to be harvested within a short time span when having reached their full maturity; in order to avoid food waste and to ensure farmer’s economic stability, they are first sent fresh from the tree and for the rest of the season kept in cold storage, never longer than the current season (maximum of 12 weeks storage) * Harvested upon request, without waxes and preservatives on the skin, sent in a plastic-free cardboard box * You can bite directly into the pears and eat them fresh, or let them ripen to make jam from them, for example * Our trees are not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in size and appearance * A kilo contains between 4-7 fruits (in a box you will find between 16 and 30 pieces depending on the size) * The best place to store is in a cool environment, it is best to store your pears in the fridge, this will keep them fresh and crunchy for up to 2-3 weeks * Only put out as much as you can eat in the next two to three days, since pears ripen quickly at room temperature; if you prefer your pears to be softer, store them a little warmer

Quand le recevez-vous?

We harvest our pears from early to mid-September. Since the Alexander Lucas pear in particular tends to fall off the tree before it is actually ripe, we often pick the pears very early (we could not sell fallen fruit because it rots too quickly). Sometimes we pick several times in the same orchard. By doing so, we allow small fruits to hang for a while and give them the chance to grow a little bigger. Whether delicately melting or crunchy hard, the Alexander Lucas pear has lovers at every stage of ripeness. To suit your preferences, you can order them from the beginning of October up until the end of December.
