You adopt a hazelnut bush from our farm in Požega (Croatie). The cultivation here is certified as organic by the European Union as of 2009. When placing the adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your hazelnut bush. In the small village of Ugarci in Croatia, I cultivate 4000 hazelnut bushes on my organic farm, which cover an area of 10 hectares. I planted most of the bushes between 2007 and 2009. This means that for a plant that will live for 40 years, they are still relatively young. The hazel bush (*Corylus avellana*) is a plant species from the birch family (Betulaceae). It is a deciduous shrub that usually grows to around five metres high and is native to Central Europe and Asia Minor. Its edible fruits, the hazelnuts, have been used by humans for thousands of years. The hazelnut bush flowers from the end of February to the beginning of March before the first leaves appear and is therefore one of the first suppliers of pollen and nectar for pollinating insects such as bees and bumblebees. Because of this characteristic, the hazelnut probably also became a symbol of fertility, spring and a new beginning. Hazelnuts were also often given as gifts at weddings in ancient times. I grow the Istrian hazelnut and Roman hazelnut varieties. The Istrian hazelnut is a native Croatian variety that is perfectly adapted to the local conditions. It harmonises perfectly with the Roman hazelnut, because this variety is a very good so-called pollinator. Hazelnut bushes need to be pollinated by pollen from another hazelnut bush nearby in order to develop nuts. Only varieties that flower at the same time are suitable for this fertilisation. Moreover, experience has shown that the Roman hazelnut also copes very well with the conditions in Croatia. The hazelnut bushes of the Istrian variety are quite lush and tend to be wider rather than taller, so they have a spherical shape. Compared to some other varieties, it produces a more regular and abundant harvest, tolerates cold and suffers less from the hazelnut weevil due to its hard shell. The Roman hazelnut is a vigorous, upright-growing shrub that reaches a height of 3 to 6 m. The crown of the plant has an oval to conical shape. Your adoption is 15 years old and its maximum lifespan is 40 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops producing for any reason, we will replace it with another, and guarantee you the delivery from the production of other units. Your hazelnut bush produces an average of 2.25kg of organic hazelnuts and hazelnut oil each season.

The nuts of the Istrian variety are light brown, wide at the top and elongated. Their taste is sweet, fine and strong. The nuts of the Roman hazelnut are rather broad and short and have a sweet, soft and mild taste. The __hazelnut oil__ also consists of a mixture of the two hazelnut varieties. The liquid, golden-coloured oil has a sweet-nutty aroma. Due to its nutty taste, it can be used in many different ways in the kitchen. It refines various dishes and adds a finishing touch to salads, mueslis, dips or desserts. Hazelnut oil also goes wonderfully in soups, such as pumpkin soups. Hazelnut oil is also popular as a skin and hair care product. If you like, you can add essential oils. Our hazelnuts are harvested by hand from mid-September and then peeled, cleaned, calibrated, dried and stored in our warehouse. For further processing, we crack some of the hazelnuts and press it into oil with our own oil press. However, to achieve a particularly good quality, the nuts must first be stored for 3 months. Cold-pressed hazelnut oil is made from raw and not roasted nuts. The unfiltered oil is then left to sediment for at least 3 weeks. In this way, the valuable nutrients are preserved and our aromatic hazelnut oil offers a special treat. As the hazelnuts arrive at your home in their shells, they have a longer shelf life and can be stored in a cool place for up to 12 months. After cracking the nuts, you should eat them within 6 weeks (please store them in a cool place). The oil will keep for 12 months as well. It is best to store nuts and oil in a fridge.

We harvest our hazelnuts every year in September and October. They are then dried in the warehouse or processed into oil. From December onwards, our hazelnuts and oil are ready to be sent to you.
