Qu'adoptez-vous?

You can choose to adopt a small potato field of 2.35m² or a large potato field of 4.7m² from our farm in Steinau (Allemagne). The cultivation here is certified as organic by the European Union and follows the strict Bioland guidelines as of 2019. The potato originated in the Andes of South America, there are still many different wild forms of this plant. Thousands of years ago, people there began to domesticate the potato and adapt it to individual growing conditions. This gave rise to a colourful variety of different potato types. In the 16th century, the potato found its way to Europe and was initially cultivated only as an ornamental plant due to its beautiful flowering. In the meantime, it has become one of the most important staple foods and is universally known and loved. What is less well known, however, is that among the many potato varieties, there are also very colourful types. We grow three different varieties of potatoes, each with its own distinctive character. In addition to the very popular table potato Soraya, which looks exactly like you would imagine a potato to look, we also grow the red-skinned Laura and the spectacularly blue-coloured Blue Anneliese. The blue colour, which even survives cooking, is a natural result of the high content of anthocyanins, a secondary plant substance that is also responsible for the bright colour of blueberries and red cabbage for example. On an area of about 2 hectares of land, we have been growing our potatoes since 2019 according to the strict guidelines of the Bioland Association. This means that we don’t use mineral fertilizers and pesticides. Instead, we control weeds mechanically by hoeing and attract beneficial insects with flowering strips and lark windows, among other things. To provide the potatoes with important nutrients, we grow legumes such as peas in the previous year. They naturally enrich the soil with nitrogen. The potatoes need this for growth and can feed on the nitrogen through the coordinated crop rotation. In spring (April - May), the potatoes are planted 8 - 10 cm deep in the previously loosened soil with a planting machine and then the soil is mounded over the tubers in such a way that the typical ridges are formed. These later facilitate not only mechanical harvesting but also weed control. In addition, the ridges offer many advantages for the growth of the potatoes, since, for example, the soil warms up faster, waterlogging cannot form and the soil is better aerated. In autumn, when the potato haulm has dried up, the tubers are ripe for harvesting. The haulm remains in the fields as fertilizer. Potato cultivation, from planting to sorting the harvested, still involves a lot of handwork on our family farm. This not only protects the potatoes, but also our soil, since we prefer to work with our small old planter instead of heavy machinery. 2 people sit on the planting machine and put the tubers in by hand. Each potato field produces an average of between 6 and 12kg of colourful Bioland organic potatoes per season depending on whether you adopt a small or big potato field.

Que recevez-vous?

We will send you the box that you choose when placing the adoption. __Small box__: 12kg box of Colourful Bioland organic potatoes __Big box__: 12kg box of Colourful Bioland organic potatoes If you have chosen a __small potato field__, you will receive a total of 6kg of freshly harvested colourful table potatoes. Of these, 4kg are Soraya, 1kg Laura and 1kg Blaue Anneliese. If you have adopted a __large potato field__ you will receive a total of 12kg of freshly harvested colourful table potatoes. Of these, 8kg are Soraya, 2kg Laura and 2kg Blue Anneliese. * Soraya: mainly firm cooking potato; the ultimate all-rounder among potatoes; round to oval tubers, with smooth skin and flat eyes; bright yellow; great for making gnocchi, jacket potatoes or potato gratin * Laura: mainly firm; deep yellow flesh; oval tubers; slightly floury and creamy taste; excellent for French fries or baked potatoes * Blue Anneliese: slightly creamy, mild and nutty flavor reminiscent of chestnuts; smooth blue skin and a bright blue flesh that retains its bright blue colour even after cooking; can be served as a colour highlight, for example as blue potato salad. * The bright blue colour of the Blue Anneliese is due to its high content of anthocyanins, a secondary plant substance to which blueberries or red cabbage also owe their colour * Organic cultivation, certified with the Organic Farming and Bioland seal since 2019 * The potatoes are shipped in a sturdy cardboard box, the potatoes are packed separately in paper bags. * The box contains a few pieces extra, in case some have been damaged * Potatoes are a purely natural product that can vary in shape, colour, weight or size from tuber to tuber * One kilo contains between 8-12 potatoes (depending on the size, you will find between 96 and 144 pieces in the large box and between 48 and 72 pieces in the small box) __Storage__ Ideally, you store your potatoes in a dark, cool and well-ventilated place. The storage temperature should ideally be between 4°C and 8°C. If you don’t have a suitable cellar or pantry, you can alternatively store them outside frost-free. To do this, store them in a box covered with straw or paper on the balcony or terrace. Again, make sure they are well ventilated to prevent unwanted mold growth. Through the optimal storage conditions you can counteract mold and premature sprouting of the potatoes. However, if the potatoes begin to change and form small sprouts, you can cut away the affected areas generously and still eat the potato. If the potato begins to sprout heavily or if green spots form, it is better not to eat them. If stored well, potatoes will keep fresh for several months and you can enjoy them throughout the whole winter.

Quand le recevez-vous?

Over the summer months, the potatoes ripen well hidden in the soil. In October they are ready for harvesting. All three varieties are ripe at the same time, so we can ensure that you receive only freshly harvested potatoes at the shipping date. You will receive the small box in mid-October, and the big box will be on its way to you a little later at the end of October.
