Juan Bonillo
La Huerta del Almanzora is a family farm where we have been growing our organic citrus fruits since April 1998. The trees were planted by my father, Martín Bonillo, and now my son, Antonio Bonillo, also gives me a hand on the farm. We are three generations involved in this project with the common goal of producing citrus fruits with respect for the environment. This is why it was one of the first farms in the region to go into organic production by applying for certification in the same year as its plantation in 1998. We have been working with ecological products for so many years that for us this is the norm. During the period in which we prepare orders for CrowdFarming our routine is as follows; on Fridays we receive the orders, that same afternoon we prepare the boxes and documentation (we print labels, letters...) On Saturdays and Sundays we pick the fruits and on Sunday afternoons we proceed to select and pack them. We discard all the fruits that have many scratches or present signs of not being in suitable conditions for their shipment and preservation, the discarded fruits are composted in the facilities to obtain fertilizer. Eventually you might find some fruits with defects in the boxes, since it is possible that we have not detected it. On Sunday nights all the boxes are ready to be loaded on the truck, which will pick them up on Monday to take them directly to your home. What motivated us to become part of this great project is to be able to send our fruit directly to clients, as quickly as possible and without intermediaries, while at the same time obtaining added value from the harvest.
Huerta del Almanzora
The property is located in Arboleas, a village in Almeria situated in the Almanzora Valley. It is an eminently agricultural region where mainly lemons, oranges, almonds and olives are grown. Currently, agriculture shares prominence with tourism as the region has become a second home for many citizens of central and northern Europe due to its good climate. Our activity in the agricultural sector has been instilled in us by generations and by the area in which we are located, to this we add the contact with nature and the open air, we both develop other parallel activities. We grow the citrus fruit in several small fields near the village with lemon trees of the Verna variety and orange trees of the Washington Navel variety. As a rootstock we have used bitter orange and an intermediate graft of sweet orange. With this we get a much more durable tree as we eliminate the mirinacea that is formed by a bad graft of bitter orange and lemon trees. By eliminating the myrinoline, we promote the circulation of the sap and avoid nutritional imbalances, attacks of gumma and premature aging of the tree. This intermediate graft improves production and leads to a better nourished, better quality fruit with a smoother skin. We grow citrus fruits without fertilizers or synthetic pesticides. Our way of controlling crop pests is based on preventive methods using natural products, as laid down by the rules of organic farming. For fertilization we mainly use goat manure from a nearby cattle farm. Currently, the project is led by my son, Antonio Bonillo, and me, Juan Bonillo. I am in charge of the care of the farms and the harvest part, and Antonio is in charge of the warehouse and administrative work. Currently we have a worker with us registered with the social security and remunerated as per agreement, this person helps us with picking and packaging. The area where the fields are located is known as Pago de la Cinta. In this area there is a natural outcrop of water that is channelled and used to irrigate the plots by gravity. When water is not being irrigated, it is stored to increase the flow in times of shortage. The plots in this area are very small and this ancestral irrigation system is still maintained as it avoids energy consumption. Furthermore, in order not to waste a drop of water from this wonderful natural source, vegetables such as beans are interspersed among the trees and the development of vegetable cover is encouraged. The Almanzora Valley has ideal conditions for the cultivation of citrus fruits because during the winter there are no frosts and it is in general a warm and very sunny climate where there are no strong winds either.
