The project

Adopt a lemon tree from the farm "Finca Villa Berta" in Alquerías (Spain) and receive your harvest in the form of organic lemons at home. The Farmer Francisco will take care of your adoption and take its picture. Also, you will be able to download the adoption certificate and, if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you receive your harvest and you enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.

What do you adopt?

Adopt a lemon tree that we cultivate under the Organic Farming regulations of the European Union since 2017. During the process of adoption you can choose a name that we will engrave on a plaque and hang on your tree. These lemon trees were planted in 2017 and in 2020 will be their first harvest. We work with two varieties: eureka and verna. The lemons change color from greenish yellow at the beginning of the season to intense yellow when ripe. Flowering takes place almost all year round, often with peaks in late summer and mid-spring. The verna variety is very typical in the Murcia region and is very popular because, due to its thick skin, the lemons can withstand the heat of summer without dehydrating. We produce according to the specifications of Organic Agriculture. This organic production system does not allow the use of synthetic chemical fertilizers or pesticides to control pests, diseases or invasive plants. Similarly, methods that cause deterioration of the soil or the environment in general cannot be used. We control pests by biological control, using natural enemies (parasitoids, predators or pathogens) to reduce the population of a pest species below a threshold of economic damage. These natural enemies, in most cases, are naturally present on the farm because we do not carry out weed control work. The productive life of a lemon tree is around 30 years. For as long as you want to keep it and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew your adoption year after year. If your lemon tree dies, we will replace it with no additional cost and assuring the delivery of your harvest from other trees. A lemon tree from our farm produces an average of 48 kg each season. You do not have to commit to the consumption of the whole harvest. Each season you may decide what quantity to reserve and pay the maintenance in accordance with the amount you reserve. This way you will only pay for what you consume and we can plan and sell the remaining harvest amount from you tree to others.

What will you receive?

During harvest season you can progressively receive the quantity of harvest that you reserve on the moment of adoption. You will be able to receive a minimum of 3 boxes, which can be increased up to 8 boxes according to your needs. Shipping format: __Box of 6kg of organic lemons__ * Verna (end of April until the end of June): elongated shape, medium to large size, almost seedless and low acidity, natural source of vitamin C * Eureka (November until February): oval shape, medium size and thin skin, natural source of vitamin C * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming seal since 2017 * Harvest on request, shipped without wax or preservative treatments in a cardboard box without plastics * One kilo contains between 4 and 6 fruits (the box contains 18 fruits approximately, depending on the size) * If you keep them in a fresh and airy place, they can last 6-7 weeks in good condition (if you want them to last longer, you can keep them in the fridge)

The eureka lemon is mainly harvested during autumn and winter, from November to February/March, but it continues to flower throughout the year, so until summer we can have eureka lemons, although in small quantities. The lemon verna has a longer flowering period than other lemon varieties and also has several blooms throughout the year. The main harvest takes place from the end of April to the end of June. During July and August, the fruit from the second flowering period is harvested. You will receive your harvest in the form of 6kg lemon boxes.

Why should you adopt?
Know who, how and where your food is produced. Source your food in a conscious, direct and consistent manner.
Buying without intermediaries allows the producer to obtain better prices. This helps generate better jobs and social standards in rural areas.
When you adopt something, you allow the producer to ensure the sale at a fixed price and to produce on demand. This also avoids wasting food that is grown without being sold.
It supports producers who strive for environmentally friendly packaging and cultivation practices.
Adopt a lemon tree in Murcia, name it and receive its harvest of organic lemons at home.
