You do not enter into any long-term commitment: once you receive your harvest and you enjoyed the experience, you may decide to renew and extend the adoption.
You adopt an avocado tree from our farm in Cútar (Spain) that we cultivate following the Organic Farming regulations of the European Union. We are in the process of converting and hope to get certified in 2023. During the process of adoption you can choose a name that we will engrave on a plaque and hang on your tree. On the Marroquino farm, we grow four varieties of avocado here at Finca Marroquino: Hass, Lamb Hass, Fuerte and Bacon. The Hass variety is the most cultivated variety worldwide and originated in California in 1926 from a Guatemalan seed. It has a long harvest season and a great quality. This variety is responsible for the increased worldwide consumption of avocado since the 60s. The other avocado variety that we cultivate is Lamb Hass. Recently introduced in Spain and derived from a seed selected from a cross-pollination of “Gwen”, it is considered the “grand-daughter” of the Hass. Other differences between these varieties are that the Lamb Hass has a higher production and ripens a little later, which allows to extend the harvest period. The Bacon and Fuerte varieties are earlier varieties and can be harvested from autumn onwards. They have a smooth skin, they're green when ripe, and they have a lower percentage of fat. But they're still delicious! Introduced in the 1920, the Bacon variety is the earliest to ripen and is very resistant to winds. It's named after its discoverer James Bacon. The Fuerte variety is so called because it was the only one that withstood a harsh winter in Mexico in 1911 (Fuerte in Spanish means 'strong'), and today still tolerates the cold better than the others. We carefully select the fruit we pick from the tree to prepare your box. This is an artisan and traditional production where no machinery is used for the cultivation nor the harvest unless the terrain is too steep and doesn’t leave us another option. Our plantation is located on a family farm that has been in conversion to organic agriculture since 2020. We use modern micro-irrigation systems in order to save water. The most special thing about our crop is the flavour of the fruit. In season, we make delicious avocado smoothies as well as homemade guacamole. We never received any award nor do we need it; our greatest reward is the satisfaction we get from giving our avocados as presents for our family and friends, and the phone call that usually follows to congratulate us for the excellent quality of the fruit. Your adoption is 20 years old and its productive life is around 50 years. For as long as you want to keep it and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew your adoption year after year. If your adoption dies, we will replace it with no additional cost assuring the delivery of your harvest from others. Your avocado tree produces an average of 24kg of avocados each season. You do not have to commit to the consumption of the whole harvest. Each season you may decide what quantity to reserve and pay the maintenance in accordance with that amount. This way you will only pay for what you consume and will be able to sell any remaining harvest to others.
During harvest season you can progressively receive the quantity of harvest that you reserve at the moment of adoption. You will be able to receive a minimum of 2 boxes, which can be increased up to 6 boxes according to your needs. Shipping format: __4kg box of avocados__: * Bacon (October-November): round, medium-large with smooth skin of dark green colour and darkens a little more as it matures, less fat than other varieties, very suitable for making guacamole * Fuerte (October-December): pear-shaped, medium-large size, smooth and thin skin, green colour when ripe with small whitish spots, less fat, very suitable for making guacamole * Hass (January until the end of March): it has a small pit and the flesh isn’t fibery, the skin is a bit rough and rather leathery, when the fruit is still on the tree, the colour is between a deep and dark green, sometimes almost black * Lamb Hass (March-May): pear-shaped and the colour is green when unripe and black when ripe, its skin is less rough and less flexible than the Hass, though it is easy to separate the skin from the flesh * Farming in transition to organic farming since 2020 * Harvest on request, shipped without wax or preservative treatments in a cardboard box without plastics * Our trees are not a screw factory: each fruit is unique in appearance and size * One kilo contains between 6 and 8 fruits (the box contains 26 fruits approximately, depending on the size) * It is a climacteric fruit, harvested when it reaches physiological ripeness but continues to evolve after harvesting until it is ready for consumption * If you keep them in a fresh and airy place, they can last 20 days in good condition (if you want them to last longer, you can keep them in the fridge) * Important: The fruits usually arrive hard, keep them at room temperature until they reach they are ready to eat; if you receive an alread ripe piece, you can put it in the fridge or eat it straight away When you receive our avocados, they will still be very hard. As they are a climacteric fruit, they will ripen in the days following the delivery. The last avocados of the season may ripen faster due to the warmer temperatures in spring. There is something you can do to obtain a staggered ripening. If you wrap a few avocados in newspaper and put them in a warm corner of the house, they will ripen faster. Once ripe, you may keep them in the fridge and they will be preserved as they are for a week. If you put the remaining unripe avocados in the fridge, the ripening process will be slowed down to a minimum and you can then gradually take some out to allow them to ripen. __How do I know that my Hass avocado is ready to eat?__ Your avocado’s skin should be black. If we remove the peduncle, we can observe one of three colours that indicate the ripening point: * Green: it isn’t yet ripe * Yellow: it is at its optimal ripening point * Brown: it is too ripe Another indicator is when it is soft to the touch when pressing it slightly. __How do I know that my Lamb Hass avocado is ready to eat?__ The Lamb Hass variety may already turn black before being completely ripe. Also, the skin is thicker than the Hass so it may require more pressure to determine its softness. The colours that can be observed under the peduncle indicate the same as for the Hass.
When will you receive it?
Each season’s climatology affects the flowering period (earlier or later), which is usually in March. It may also affect the fat content and weight of the fruit we obtain at harvest. The usual harvest periods for our varieties are: * Bacon and Fuerte avocados: from October to December * Hass avocados: from December to late March * Lamb Hass Avocado: From the beginning of April until mid-May
