Adopt a cow from the flock of "Santa Rita Bio Caseificio Sociale 1964" farm in Serramazzoni (Italia) and receive your organic Parmigiano Reggiano PDO at home. Graziano will take care of your adoption and take its picture. You will also be able to download the adoption certificate, and if you wish, plan your visit to the farm. As the production coming from one cow is big, the adoption is shared among various people. If you wish to have a bigger share, you may adopt more than once. You do not enter into any long-term commitment: Although your adoption will be renewed automatically, you will always be informed in advance and may decide to cancel your adoption at any time as long as the preparation has not yet begun.
You adopt a cow from our farm in Serramazzoni (Italia). The livestock farming and the produce are both certified as organic by the European Union as of 1992. You will adopt an Italian Frisona Pezzata Nera cow that produces milk to make Parmigiano Reggiano D.O.P. and is bred according to the principles of ancient local traditions. The entire process must comply with the regulations of the Parmigiano Reggiano Consortium, from feeding the cows to the delivery of the milk to the dairy, right up to the production and maturing of the cheese. In addition, it must comply with agricultural and organic regulations. The Friesian breed is one of the most widespread dairy cattle breeds in the world and is known for its high milk production. However, our cows produce on average between 23-25 litres per day, so in a lactation period of about 300 days we reach 6900 - 7000 litres with which we produce about 540 kg of Parmigiano Reggiano D.O.P. (the milk yield is therefore 7.8%). Our dairy has collected many prestigious awards in international competitions, including the gold medal in 2004 at the Mountain Cheese Olympics in Appenzell, Switzerland. In addition, in 2012 and 2017 we were awarded the gold medal at the BIO CASEUS competition in Nuremberg. Our herds have complied with organic animal production guidelines since 1992. What makes our business special is the passion and loyalty with which we care for our animals. We treat our cows as they should be treated by respecting their biological cycles. We have 2 cows per hectare, they are in loose housing (no chains) with free access to the pasture. Just like us humans, these animals prefer to graze in groups in open spaces when the climate allows it, a behaviour that allows them to eat more than when grazing alone. The typical diet we give our cows consists of 80% hay and forage and 20% feed consisting of barley, maize and field beans/protein peas. With this diet, our animals produce less milk, but we respect the environment and increase their welfare, thereby also increasing the average life span of each individual cow. The hay we use for our cows comes from the grass crops of 10 farms that we work alongside. At this moment in time, we are proud to be able to independently manage the feed for the cows. Round bales of hay are stored in airy, semi-enclosed barns. Male calves, after spending time with their mother's milk, are transferred to meat farms. A cow that does not produce milk is a cow that is no longer fertile. After a series of fertilisation attempts with the bull, if she does not become pregnant, she is transferred to a beef farm. Our flock has an average age of 8 years and the maximum lifespan of a cow is about 10 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops producing for any reason, we will replace it with another, and we guarantee your delivery from the production of other units. Your adoption produces an average of 2500l of organic cow's milk each season. With this amount we can produce around 200kg of organic Parmigiano Reggiano PDO. 100 CrowdFarmers will share the adoption, and each one will receive a box containing 2kg of organic Parmigiano Reggiano PDO.
Each season we will send you a box with: 2 x __Organic Parmigiano Reggiano PDO aged 24 months__ (1kg , vacuum packed) * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 1992 * Parmigiano Reggiano PDO is a hard cheese with animal rennet * The entire production chain is certified by the Consortium for the Protection of Parmigiano Reggiano PDO * Matured for 24 months, the most typical ageing period for Parmigiano Reggiano * Intense flavour and straw yellow colour * Rock-cut according to ancient tradition (irregular cut that helps to preserve the quality of the product) * Can be eaten with pasta or alone in flakes * We use only three ingredients to produce our cheese: raw milk from our cows, animal rennet and salt * The product comes in vacuum-packed slices and must be stored in a cool place between 2 and 8°C: this way it can last up to180 days * If small mould spots form on the cheese, you can simply scrape them off with a knife and eat the rest of the cheese with no worries * Once opened, the 24-month matured cheese must be consumed within 15-30 days
