¿Qué adoptas?

You adopt 3m² of a tomato field from our farm in Nardò (Italia). The cultivation here has been certified as organic by the European Union since 2016. We specialise in open field production of baby plum tomatoes, following the practices of organic farming and regenerative organic farming. In spring, we plant our tomatoes in fields where we have practised three year crop rotation, in soil which has been manured with green vegetables and other essences (known as 'green' fertilisation). This manure and crop rotation process returns nitrogen to the soil which is essential for plants. What makes our products special is the flavour. Only by tasting them can you truly understand how the natural way in which they have been grown contributes to the fullness of the flavour, and this comes from having followed the rhythms of nature, without forcing them. We practise certified organic farming, and we try to intervene in the field as little as possible. We start with a healthy soil and trust that nature can balance and restore itself. The tomato plant is native to South America and arrived in Europe in 1600 thanks to Christopher Columbus. Originally the fruits were only yellow (hence the name 'golden apple') and only later did red fruits start to appear. The variety we grow is a non-hybrid seed and its origin is unknown. The cultivation and consumption of the yellow winter tomato is widespread in Salento. For me, it is a special tomato because it is harvested in the summer and kept fresh throughout the winter, thus allowing a typically summery and fresh product throughout the year. All this without the use of greenhouses or cold storage, but only by taking care in how it is stored. This tomato variety is very well suited to our area because it has a low water requirement, a fundamental characteristic in an area like ours where water is a scarce commodity. The plant is of determinate growth: this means that it initially grows erect but then development tends to stop and the plant falls back to the ground. The yield is low, as in most local varieties not obtained through hybridisation (which is what happens in commercial varieties). Your tomato field produces an average of 8kg of organic winter yellow cherry tomatoes each season. You do not have to commit to ordering the entire harvest though. Each season you can decide how much you want to reserve, and you pay the maintenance cost according to that amount. This way you only pay for what you plan to consume, and we can offer any surplus harvest to others.

¿Qué recibes?

You can reserve between 2 and 4 boxes for the season, and then plan the deliveries for any of the delivery dates available in the shipment calendar. Shipping format: __2 kg box of organic winter yellow cherry tomatoes__ * Yellow cherry tomatoes: small round berry tomato, thick skin almost always yellow in colour that can turn to dark yellow or light orange, firm salmon or very light red flesh, not too sweet tasting * As they have a thick, tough skin, we recommend using cooked rather than raw cherry tomatoes in salads * Organic farming certified by the European Organic Farming label since 2016 * The tomatoes are harvested in the summer and stored in crates until dispatch; a characteristic of these tomatoes is that they do not need to be kept in cold storage * If stored in a single row in a box, in a cool place away from heat sources, they can keep for several weeks It is a typical local variety that is harvested in midsummer and stored in small crates (where we put a maximum of two rows of cherry tomatoes) or hung (hence the name 'pendula tomatoes'). We monitor the cherry tomatoes regularly, as with the passing of weeks and months some fruits may rot, in which case they are discarded immediately. In Apulia and other neighbouring regions, there are red and yellow tomatoes in their various shades: we grow the yellow ones. They are the protagonists of the very famous Apulian recipe for 'scattati o scattarisciati' cherry tomatoes, to be eaten cooked with slices of homemade bread or in the preparation of a perfect sauce to accompany fish and shellfish. If you don't like the thick skin, it can be removed with a fork or a vegetable mill when cooked.

¿Cuándo lo recibes?

Winter yellow tomatoes are harvested between July and August but, thanks to their thick skin, they can be stored until late winter. Therefore, we will send them to you from the beginning of November, when there are no tomatoes in season produced in the open field.
