You adopt 2 artichoke plants from our farm in Roscoff (Francia) that we cultivate following the Organic Farming regulations of the European Union. We are already in the process of converting and expect to be officially certified by 2023. When placing the adoption you can choose a name which we will use to identify your artichoke plants. The artichoke is a plant that is very well acclimatised to the coasts of northern Brittany, emblematic of the vegetable farms of the region. The two varieties grown are Camus and Castel. The artichoke is part of the Asteraceae family, and is native to the Mediterranean basin. The artichokes you can find on your shelves come from different botanical crosses, which explains the existence of varieties with rather purple, white or green heads (such as Camus and Castel), and of different sizes. It was Queen Catherine de' Medici who introduced this vegetable to the French royal dining tables. However, it was not until 1810 that an agronomist created the Camus variety, which has since been grown on Breton soil! Here, there are no seeds (that would be too easy!), and the artichoke is cultivated by root division. In practice, we pull out a root and remove the plants one by one, and these are then replanted in another plot. It is a very time-consuming technique, but it allows us to have robust plants that are strictly identical to the mother plant. So that they can flourish, we place one plant per square metre. After that, a lot of work on the crop is necessary to prevent the plants from being overwhelmed by weeds. A plant produces between 2 and 4 heads. We call the head in the centre the "mother". Peripheral heads are called "side shoots". The harvest takes place as soon as the side shoots reach the level of the mother. It requires several runs in the same plot in order to allow the side shoots to grow once the mother has been cut off. After harvesting, the above-ground parts of the crop are crushed. So all that remains is the root in the earth. This root will provide several potential plants. Only one will be kept to allow the plant to grow well and provide large flower heads. An artichoke crop can remain in place for up to 3-4 years on the same plot. Your adoption is 3 years old and its maximum lifespan is 4 years. For as long as you want to keep your adoption, and we can continue taking care of it, you can renew year after year. If your adoption stops producing for any reason, we will replace it with another, and guarantee you the delivery from the production of other units. Your artichoke plants produce an average of 2.5kg of artichokes each season.
Each season we will send you: __1 x 2.5kg box of artichokes__ * Camus or Castel: of a light green colour, large, well rounded with a very fleshy heart; slightly sweet taste; melting texture * Scratches may be present on the leaves of the artichoke (brown/black traces): they correspond to the areas of friction, but do not affect the quality of the produce * After harvesting, the artichoke will begin to wither and its leaves begin to whiten (it's at its best at this point!): this does not alter the quality of the produce though, it's part of the normal cycle! * Farming in conversion to Organic Farming since 2020 * Picked the day before shipment at their optimal point of ripeness and shipped in a cardboard box without plastics * Artichokes can be eaten in many ways: cooked in water or steamed to eat the leaves and heart with a sauce (mayonnaise, yoghurt sauce, etc.) or use the heart in other dishes (salads, etc.); you can also " twist " the artichokes to remove the bottoms directly * Our farm is not a screw factory: each artichoke is unique in appearance and size * One kilo contains between 1 and 2 artichokes (the box contains between 3 and 5 artichokes depending on the size) * To store them, there are two solutions: either store them in a cool and humid place (refrigerator), where they can last up to 10 days, or store them like a flower, in a tall jar so that the stem soaks up water; in this case, they will last for a few days (it depends on the temperature) It is an original plant because we consume the flower while it is still at the bud stage (the bottom part, also called the heart of the artichoke), as well as the base of the leaves of the artichoke (the bracts).

The artichoke is a crop that likes water and heat, so the full production season is in May-June and September-October, although it is also found in summer, albeit in a slightly more limited quantity. The fact that harvesting is carried out manually allows the produce to be harvested at its best.
